Unusual house in Dalat. Crazy house

This hotel known as Crazy House madam Hang Nga looks more like a set for the film The Clinic of Doctor Calligari (1989) or an acid hallucination than a hotel in traditional concept. Crazy House built by ex's daughter Secretary General of the Communist Party of Vietnam, who graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute and lived in the USSR for 14 years. The Vietnamese do not like this building, considering it a habitat for demons, but tourists are absolutely delighted. Especially those who not only visited a fairy tale - on an excursion, but plucked up the courage to live in guest house Madame Hang Nga for at least one night.

Hang Nga Guest House was built in 1990. It is located in the city of Dalat, about 300 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

The architecture of the building is so amazing and fantastic that the first visitors began to call it Crazy House. Under this name, the unusual hotel is now known throughout the world.

The owner, author of the idea and architect of the Hang Viet Nga hotel is the daughter of a prominent politician Vietnam, associate of Ho Chi Minh and former general secretary of the country's Communist Party - Truong Tinh (which means The Great March). Like any self-respecting daughter of her father, Comrade Hang Nga is a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Hang Nga was educated in the Soviet Union: she graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute and defended her candidate's thesis. Natasha, as she was called in the USSR, lived in our country for 14 years and speaks excellent Russian.

The Vietnamese treated the unusual structure with cautious misunderstanding and distrust. Many people still believe that this is what houses in Russia look like.

The main material used in the construction of Crazy House is concrete, into which the roots and trunks of huge tropical trees are embedded.

Hang Nga does not deny that her architectural and aesthetic tastes were influenced by Antonio Gaudi, Salvador Dali and... Walt Disney.

And here’s how comrade Hang Nga explains the idea and meaning of his construction: “It’s no secret that in Lately surrounding us natural world very much changed, and in some places destroyed. This is true both for Vietnam individually and for the whole globe. And the reckoning is already coming..."

Now the Crazy House Hotel has ten rooms open for guests, each decorated in honor of an animal or plant: there is a room “Tiger”, “Ant”, “Pheasant”, “Bamboo”... Depending on the size of the room and the season, the cost of living will be from 30 to 70 dollars, which is a lot for Vietnam.

According to Hang Ng, each room represents the character and strength of the animal or plant to which it is dedicated. So, a tiger is strength, an ant is tirelessness in work, etc. Living in the appropriate room, the guest must feel and perceive the aura of the “owner”.

Crazy House is not only a popular hotel, but also a tourist attraction. For about two dollars you can buy a ticket and explore the entire unusual complex, relax in the gardens, admire the view from the rooftops, and go to the souvenir shop.

WELCOME TO THE MAD HOUSE!

Guys, this is not about politics, this is about Vietnam. We are talking about an architecturally curious complex of buildings in the city of Da Lat. But first things first.

It was this May in Da Lat. Beautiful mountain resort in Vietnam. This is the former summer residence of the French colonialists, who wisely escaped here from the fierce heat on the coast. It is located among picturesque hills at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. The region has a temperate climate and is replete with lakes, waterfalls, evergreen forests and gardens. The city itself is a cocktail of narrow cobbled streets, cozy churches and monasteries, adjacent to gloomy buildings of the socialist past.

But there is one trick here. It's such architectural complex as if from "Alice in Wonderland" and... in a word, it's complete madness!

The building is known among the Vietnamese people as a "madhouse" and is at the same time a hotel, a cafe, and art gallery. There are caves, giant spider webs made of wires, concrete tree trunks, one nude female statue (a rarity in Vietnam), a concrete giraffe (with a tea room built inside), etc.

The creator of the gallery, Mrs. Dang Viet Nga (call her “Hang Nga”), she was born in Hanoi and lived in Moscow for 14 years, where, by the way, she defended her PhD in architecture.

In short, judge for yourself, below I will give a selection of what I filmed.

Construction began in 1990 - Mrs. Dang Viet Nga wanted to create something unique, and so the story of this unusual creation began.

It may sound corny, but it's not entirely true - most foreigners are completely amazed to find such a counter-cultural masterpiece in Dalat. My wife took it that way.

Having started from scratch, there was a time when the owner was on the verge of bankruptcy; all banks refused to give her a loan. Dad has already ceased to be president. It was then that the idea was born to allow tourists into the building for a small fee. However, after going through a winding path, the architect does not calm down, but continues to plan new structures, such as a community house inside existing territory. Construction continues to this day! Just like the Sagrada familia in Barcelona.

The main idea of the architect Hang Nga was to recreate a fairy-tale tree house with uneven windows, cave stairs and bizarre shapes. The exterior and interior design of the building is created using all sorts of twisting branches and roots, and the empty “tree” expands in all directions, rising higher and higher, reaching the blue sky.

Walking through the corridors and rooms inside the house, you seem to find yourself in long-forgotten fairy tales from childhood, artificial mushrooms and cobwebs on the walls, every detail is in perfect harmony with the overall picture, leaving an unforgettable impression.

"Madhouse" - "Crazy House" is official name, although the owner christened her creation Hang Nga - Lunar (villa). Dang Viet Nga began building the strange structure in 1990. I discarded the canons - no straight lines or rectangles. Continuous bends, interlacing, labyrinths... By the way, until recently, some Vietnamese were convinced that this is exactly how they build in Russia

The five-story hotel is not lost among the mountains and tropical trees. On the contrary, a cacophony of free forms harmoniously flows into nature.

View of Da Lat from the roof of the Hang Nga Hotel.

Even the trees and snags are amazed.

The Hang Nga Hotel is a fantastic building. It resembles a large, creepy tree. The rooms inside curl, the ceilings twist, and the hallways take unexpected turns. You can often see a giant cobweb hanging from the ceiling. In general, a house made from old good fairy tales. The hotel also has other buildings - in the form of a giant giraffe (coffee shop) and in the form of a huge spider.

In addition, the Mad House is also a hotel with stunning themed rooms, such as the room of the tiger, eagle, ant, etc. According to Viet Ng, each room has its own meaning: the tiger room represents the Chinese; eagle - Americans; and the ant of the Vietnamese themselves. Each person has his own understanding and perceives everything as he pleases, but there is one common detail - the building is so pure and natural that it becomes very easy to get lost in your childhood memories.

Since its construction in 1990, the building has become famous for unique architecture and is considered one of the most unusual buildings in the world. The architecture of the Hang Nga guest house is so fantastic that the first guests who visited this house exclaimed “Crazy house”!? Since then he has been called that way. The Vietnamese do not like this place, it is too “not standard”, so the main visitors to this house are tourists. You can stay and live in this guest house, although the price is not cheap - $100 per day, per person. Look at the numbers.

Interior.

Entrance to one of the rooms.

Amenities in the room.

We noticed that the theme of the web is often found in interior decoration.

Finally - atass, of course.

The owner has three cars in her garage. But my favorite is the Zhiguli classic 7th model. Here it is, by the way, in the garage.

Tourists are everywhere.

There are also dark moments in architecture.

And look at the contrast with this funny episode.

But at the core, of course, it’s rubbish. Artistic truth.

Souvenir shop.

Another one of the rooms.

Like... cozy.

And this is a cafe.

from the biography: the owner is Mrs. Hank Nga, an architect and the daughter of the second president of a united Vietnam. She lived, as I already wrote, in Moscow for 14 years, defended her PhD and now designs various non-standard buildings. Usually she herself sits at the entrance of her creation and sells tickets. But this time we were unlucky, the hostess was away. Nice lady, huh?

In this photo, Ms. Hang Nga's father is on the left, next to the Vietnamese national leader, Ho Chi Minh City.

Hang Nga is not only the author of the construction project. She also lives there. Which, in essence, is also something to be proud of.

Construction of the complex continues to this day.

Here, I photographed the technology of such architecture.

Where everything is done carefully and by talented hands.

The huge fly on the wall turned out to be natural and very harmonious.

Floral ornament predominates.

I wonder what it's like for the neighbors?

The Dalatians used to call the most unusual building in their city either a Russian house or a Moscow hotel. The owner of the hotel-gallery Dang Viet Nga (her details sound so natural) moved to Dalat in 1983, which she liked for its mild climate, amazing scenery and, as she says, pleasant disposition local residents. So he lives here to this day.

The stairs with semicircular steps are narrow - it’s impossible to separate. Inside it feels like you are crawling in the trunk of an old tree.

For some reason, everyone calls the main Russian attribute of the “Madhouse” fly agarics and generally some kind of mushrooms, which the owner placed in abundance on the territory.

The constant flow of tourists shows that for people this is not just a hotel where they can stay overnight. This is a building that you will remember and tell even your grandchildren about visiting. For a fee (100 bucks), tourists can spend the whole night at the Hang Nga Hotel. However, you will have to take into account that exactly at 7 am the house-museum opens its doors to visitors.

In harmony with the surrounding world.

This is such crap.

This is me, trying to capture. I don’t know if it was possible?

Each of those who go on an excursion to Dalat knows that they simply need to visit the Crazy House or, in other words, the “madhouse” in Vietnam. Many people want to book a room and stay there fabulous place at least until the morning, but not everyone will be able to do this, since there are only nine rooms in the hotel and they are almost never empty. But, despite everything, sightseeing tour around the hotel you are definitely provided with.

If you are thinking about whether to buy a centralized excursion tour or go on your own, then it is better to stop at latest version, since getting to this structure is not at all difficult, and a tour guide is simply not needed here.

What does it represent?

Crazy House is not only one of the main attractions of Dalat, but also one of the most unusual houses world, one of the top ten most interesting architectural objects.

Crazy House is completely built in the style of a "fairytale" orphanage"and resembles a huge tree with roots and branches woven together, covered with cobwebs and moss.

The Madhouse is the result of the creative thought of a popular female architect in Vietnam, Dang Hang Nga, who once learned her profession in Moscow, and then, returning to her homeland in Vietnam and working for several years government positions, decided to go my own way. The construction of such a house was her long-time dream, and as soon as she had the opportunity to realize it, this unusual structure was erected in the central part of Dalat. Hang Nga herself assures that her project is a call to preserve nature and the environment. According to the architect, modern man is in no way interested in the fact that his heirs will be left after him, and he is also completely indifferent to ecological situation in the world around him.

Because of its unusual appearance, which stands out strongly from the general appearance of the city, decorated in the spirit of French provincial houses, Crazy House was constantly criticized local authorities who tried to remove the hated building. But, over time, Crazy House began to attract more and more tourists to Dalat, which means the welfare of the entire city began to increase, so the Dalat administration closed its eyes and decided to leave everything as it was.

History of construction

Mrs. Dang Nga is the daughter of a fairly famous politician in Vietnam. It was he who began to finance the “brainchild” of the young architect back in 1990, but over time the golden flow dried up, and the building was never completed.

Dang Nga tried to get a loan from some bank in Vietnam to complete the construction, but not a single prestigious one financial institution didn't undertake to finance so much unusual project. Then the architect decided to open a kind of museum within the walls of the insane asylum, and also began renting out rooms to extreme guests who would like to spend the night in such unusual place. From then on, the madhouse in the central part of Dalat received another name - “Hang Nga Villa”.

Today, construction cannot be called complete, since new buildings and facilities (restaurants, guest rooms, etc.) are constantly being completed.

Guest rooms

Today, Crazy House can offer guests nine comfortable rooms, as well as a separate house for honeymoon called "Honey Moon".

Each hotel room symbolizes its own animal. There is a room of a tiger, a bear, a kangaroo, an ant, an eagle, a termite, a pheasant, etc. The cost of renting rooms varies, as they are equipped differently. In the hotel you will not find standard things and pieces of furniture, because everything that is here is made according to special sketches and is exclusively handmade.

Rent a room in this crazy hotel will cost from 25 to 150 dollars.

The main condition for renting a room is the need to constantly keep the door unlocked, free for tourists to access, because rooms are also exhibition halls. But don’t be scared right away, because this rule only applies in strictly set hours museum work in daytime. At night, you can enjoy being alone in this crazy fairy tale. True, recently tourists have increasingly noted the fact that they were unable to get into all the rooms due to their occupancy and closure at the time of visiting this hotel.

Some guests of this strange hotel report in their reviews that after the museum closes for the night, the hotel sometimes hosts various themed parties.

Museum opening hours

You can visit the Crazy House Museum in Da Lat, popular among travelers, from 08.30 to 19.00 daily. Admission costs about $2 for an adult and about a dollar for children under 15 years old. Anyone under 10 years old can enter without paying for a ticket.

We recommend going on an excursion either before the opening itself or after 17.00, when the influx of tourists subsides. During the daytime, traffic jams constantly form on the bridges and in the passages of the insane asylum, since even two people can hardly pass each other here.

In Vietnam there is Crazy House - a hotel-madhouse in a stunning style. In general, the hotel was originally called the Hang Nga Guest House (translated from Vietnamese as Moonlight), and received its current nickname precisely for its strange “fairy-tale” design. Thanks to him, the building is among the ten most unusual buildings in the world.

The owner of the Hang Nga tree hotel and part-time its architect is Dang Viet Nga, the daughter of the famous Vietnamese politician and, as we see, a big fan of Antoni Gaudi. By the way she for a long time lived and studied to be an architect in Russia. Returning to her homeland, Dang Viet Nga decided to fulfill her dream and bring this masterpiece to life.

The owner of Crazy House also has her own collection of cars, among them our dear Zhiguli.

Rare cars are kept behind the web

At first, the construction, which began in 1990, was carried out with OCT money, but when it ran out, the architect was faced with the problem of misunderstanding contemporary art: not a single bank wanted to give a loan for the construction of this strange house. Then Dang Viet Nga decided to turn the house into a museum with paid entrance and opened rooms for tourists who wanted to spend the night in them. Thanks to this, construction continued, and is still ongoing:

Before the “cladding” the building looks quite normal

And so they hide its “man-made” origin, disguising it as a natural object

The hotel's external (and internal) appearance resembles a giant fairy-tale tree with intertwined branches, on which you can see giant cobwebs, mushrooms and fairy-tale animals.

Not all the buildings are in the form of trees, there is also quite an elven house, they say that it contains the apartments of the owner herself:

In general, the hotel area really looks like a fairy tale: numerous narrow staircases-transitions hanging in the air, giant stone animals and plants.

Walking along narrow passages with branches hanging high in the air is truly scary!

It is impossible to break up with someone on such stairs

And for this photo it took a lot of courage, very high and scary, but you can see Dalat

It’s not clear where the “branches” of the hotel are and where the real trees are...

In the hotel, next to the reception, there is a very cozy hall with a photo history of Mrs. Dang Viet Nga’s family and a piano:

Some kind of conference room?

The piano is out of tune, and it is not surprising if every tourist can play it. We played the “Old French Song” quite well

The rooms at Crazy House also have a “nature” theme: each of them is designed in the style of an animal (bear, kangaroo, termite, pheasant, eagle, etc.) All rooms have a fireplace.

There is also a two-story honeymoon house called Honey Moon. Whole month Of course, it will be difficult to stay here, but you can stay for a couple of nights.

There are several bonuses for residents: firstly, they can explore the entire territory alone, without numerous and ubiquitous tourists, and do best photos the famous "Madhouse" in Dalat. The second bonus will, of course, be free entry.

Each room has a sign with its name so that there are no questions))

And here is the kangaroo room itself

There are also disadvantages to such accommodation: during the day the same tourists will stomp heavily, scream and try to look into your room. You definitely won’t be able to relax in your room during the day, but you can spend your days walking around Dalat or visiting it.

Room rates at Crazy House

You can spend a night in this unusual hotel for very real money: prices here start from just $30 per night:

Unusual architectural structure caught the attention of thousands of journalists, became a sensation and a member of the top most unusual hotels in the world - all this is the Hang Nga guest house, also known as Crazy House.

One of the most vivid impressions from, yes, perhaps, for all of us, was a trip to the hotel, also known as the “Crazy House”, which is located in the city of Dalat. We planned this trip for the whole day, since it takes a long time to get here, but it’s worth it.

Beautiful crazy house area

As I have said, and more than once, we plan and visit all our excursions and visits to attractions on our own, but we purchased this excursion from a Russian agency in Nha Trang. We took a VIP tour so as not to go with a whole crowd of tourists, there were 10 of us. We thought it would be cheaper and more convenient. In general, early in the morning at 6.30 am a minibus arrived for us.

The trip to the city took 2.5-3 hours. As soon as Nha Trang and its suburbs ended, complete off-road conditions began, but thanks to our driver, the trip was very comfortable, plus the bus had air conditioning. On the way, we stopped at a local cafe, which I think is completely pointless, all the tourists had already had breakfast and this was an unnecessary advertising ploy to sell tourists three different expensive trinkets.

There was another 10-minute stop, where they showed us how coffee grows on the slopes of a mountain, an interesting sight, of course, we saw this for the first time in our lives. It is especially interesting and surprising how the Vietnamese assemble it; if you are not careful, you can break all your legs by flying off a cliff.

The only way to get to the house is by taxi.

Cobwebs, want to scare?

To familiarize tourists with the history of the hostess, photographs are posted with the history of life and the creation of this amazing place.

Madame Dang Viet Nga

Mistress's story

This house simply fascinated me with its uniqueness and unusualness. There are many winding stairs going into the sky, some have no railings and you need to be very careful not to fall. When you climb higher and higher up the stairs, it takes your breath away, raising your hands up, you feel the breath of the wind.

Fancy stairs

Complete immersion in childhood, I completely forgot about everything in the world, I wanted to see every detail, every corner of this house. Having climbed one of the stairs, we found ourselves on a balcony where huge buffalo horns were located.

One of the hotel rooms

Room view

After wandering around further, we saw a room of a bear, an eagle, a kangaroo, an ant, and a tiger. What do you think of these names? Very unusual. Everything inside is miniature: the table, the bed, in general everything. All the furniture here is designer and made from natural materials. I was amazed at how meticulously everything was done and with love for my creation. You won't see here obtuse angles, everything is made in the form of various twisted and rounded shapes. This tree house with its labyrinths and caves is simply mind-blowing. The house seems to be alive and envelops you with its winding roots and branches. There is a special energy here, the energy of nature.

Bear room

The territory of the house is very green, they add colors bright flowers. Just an amazing sight. When we walked around the house, it felt like we were walking through a labyrinth, everything is so unusual and you don’t know where you’ll end up and what awaits you around the next corner and big amount descents and ascents.

History of creation

Initially, this building was called “Villa Hang Hga” Lunar Villa (dedicated to lovers) and only then the tourists themselves renamed it “Crazy House” or “Madhouse”. This work of art is ranked 10th in the world as the most extraordinary structure. Its area is 1,600 sq.m.

The area is quite green

The architect and designer Dang Viet Nga herself built it with the idea of showing people how fragile and beautiful our nature is. Another interesting thing is that she studied at Moscow architectural institute and lived in Moscow for 14 years. Upon returning home, I designed houses according to the state. order and only years later was she able to begin implementing her own ideas. She fundamentally departed from the usual traditional principles design and built something truly unique.

View from above of all this disgrace))

Construction began back in 1990 and continues to this day. Additional extensions are being added to the house. The structure is made in the form of a huge fairy-tale tree with spreading branches and exciting transitions. The style is a bit like the famous Gaudi. Just think about it, every step here is made by hand.

You could even break your neck on these steps.

At one stage of construction there was not enough money and all the banks refused her, but Dang Viet Nga did not give up and it was then that it occurred to her to take a nominal fee for viewing this house of hers. We can only say thank you to her for not backing down and for the world to see this unique structure.

I don't even know what this is

Transitions

Sometimes the hostess comes out to the guests, communicates with them and agrees to a photo session. Having charged a very small fee for visiting, today she is a millionaire and a highly respected woman all over the world. Lives in a separate house on the territory of his building. Dang Viet Nga was able to make her dream come true and showed the whole world how to move away from stereotypical thinking. With its structure, it encourages everyone to protect and appreciate the nature around them, and not destroy it.

House-hotel

This is not just a unique Crazy House building, it is also a working hotel. It is possible to stay in any of the rooms here, and there is a wide choice, but still, I would not want to stay here overnight. And although I do not suffer from claustrophobia, the rooms here are still too small, and the ceilings are very low, the windows are simply miniature, only a child can live here)) and in addition, according to the rules, it is forbidden to close the doors.
