It is better to start working with coarse-grain sandpaper, and apply the finishing touches with fine-grain sandpaper. All growths and sharp jagged edges should be removed from the branch; the bark can be left if desired.

Decorating and shaping the handle

Some wands (such as Hermione Granger's) have a handle, but this is optional.
