History of Znamenka

A Scythian mound was excavated near the city, in which gold jewelry was found.

In the spring of 1869, a group of workers was brought to the Black Forest. Thousands of fines cleared the way for the “cast iron”, unprecedented in these parts. A large number of Penal prisoners died from epidemics and exhausting labor. The railway quickly moved through oak and hornbeam thickets to the northeast. Znamenka was founded in 1869, when train traffic opened on the Odessa-Kharkov railway. That year, on the lawn of the Black Forest, through which the Elisavetgrad-Kryukov section ran, the construction of the station and office premises was completed. The station got its name from the village of Znamenki, located 3 km from it. In August 1873, train traffic was opened on the Znamenka - Nikolaev section, and three years later - to Fastov. With a small railway station Znamenka turned into a railway junction. Simultaneously with the construction of the station, a small village of railway workers, Osipov, arose on lands rented from the Osipov landowners by settlers from neighboring villages and other counties. On turn of the 19th century- XX centuries to the south of the station (also on leased lands) another village arose - Linitsky. The expansion of the railway junction in subsequent years led to fast growth population of station villages. In 1913, in the villages of Osipov and Linitsky there were about 6 thousand people.

Yesterday I talked about the Znamensky orphanage. After our visit to the orphanage, we had some time left, and we decided to take a walk and see the city.

The history of the city is directly connected with the railway. Znamenka was founded in 1869 as a station on the Elisavetgrad-Kryukov railway, in the middle of the Black Forest.
Now Znamenka is a major railway junction.
