Online English classes. First steps in English: where to start? Self-learning English from scratch

Recently, to improve your career growth or to continue your studies abroad, learning English on your own has become popular. Of course, for many the question arises - where to find a good English tutorial, audio lessons and other materials that will effectively help you master a foreign language in a certain period of time. It is worth saying that learning English on your own is a long process, but everything is in your hands and you can make this process exciting and enjoyable.
So, you decided not to hire a tutor, not to pay money for courses or book tutorials, but to choose to learn English for free on your own using online lessons. It is worth saying that at first, most people fail to achieve any positive result and, naturally, they simply give up.

Stereotypes are what hinder English learning

These are the components that most people who decide to undergo self-study English course at home and advance at least a little in your knowledge:

  • the majority are confident that learning any foreign language on your own is a very difficult task;
  • many people learn a language but do not achieve the expected results;
  • most people reach a certain level of knowledge, say advanced, but it takes them years to learn;
  • many people think that they are simply not capable of learning a second language;

All of the above can be transformed into one single whole and conclude that learning English from scratch is a long and thorny path. However, there are also quick learning courses, that is, you can master the English language in just two months. Just give up traditional learning methods that are based on textbooks, cramming dictionaries, basic grammar, as well as boring and monotonous dialogues.
We are all familiar with this approach to learning a foreign language from school – if you are not going to read Shakespeare in the original, why “gnaw” on the grammar stone. User reviews indicate that the method of paid services remains school-based, only the learning process occurs in an accelerated mode, that is, you study English not two hours a week, but seven hours a day.

Correct methods are the key to success

Do you want to start learning English online? Leave books and lessons for later. First, you need to decide on the important aspects of your teaching methodology. That is, you must become your own teacher. The main thing is to put grammar aside in Kamchatka; you won’t need it if you just want to communicate with native speakers, listen to radio and television programs, of course, if you are not going to take an international exam to obtain a certificate. But this is not the main thing - no matter what method you use when mastering the language learning course at home, what is important is your positive mood during classes, and then a positive result will not be long in coming.
So, 3 main principles self-learning English from scratch:

  • motivation – you must really want to learn a foreign language;
  • the right method – try several teaching methods and choose the best one for yourself;
  • learning process - decide why you need knowledge of English - for everyday communication or for subsequent studies at prestigious foreign universities.

And most importantly, don’t “stand” in one place – constantly develop and improve your knowledge. Use the lessons posted on our website for this, because they are offered to you completely free of charge!

Despite the fact that at school a foreign language is included in the group of compulsory disciplines, few manage to master it as part of the school course. Therefore, the question of how to learn English on your own from scratch at home is acute.

You can master a language at home without outside help. You just need to have clear motivation and choose the right course of study. This will allow you to achieve results. I have a collection of tips that I will present to you.

  • First of all, determine the goals for which you are learning the language: passing an international exam, employment in a foreign company, communication with residents of other countries, or confidence in traveling abroad. Methodology is determined by intentions.
  • I recommend starting your study by mastering the basics. Without this, it is impossible to learn a language. Pay attention to the alphabet, reading rules and grammar. A tutorial will help you cope with the task. Buy it at a bookstore.
  • As soon as the initial knowledge becomes stable, choose the option of contact learning. We are talking about remote courses, distance learning school or classes via Skype. If you have strong motivation and language learning is progressing well, having an interlocutor will not hurt, since outside control is the key to successful learning.
  • When mastering your chosen course, pay attention to reading fiction. At first, I recommend using adapted books. In the future, switch to full texts. As a result, you will master the technique of speed reading.
  • Novels and detective stories are suitable for learning. Even if the book you choose is not a literary masterpiece, it will help expand your vocabulary with new words and expressions. If you encounter unfamiliar vocabulary while reading, I recommend writing it out, translating it and memorizing it. Over time, you will see that an extensive vocabulary is often repeated in works.
  • Watch movies, TV series and programs in English. At first, even with effective and intensive training, understanding something is problematic. Over time, get used to foreign speech and be able to understand. Spend half an hour watching it every day.

Even if you have recently started learning a language, try to speak more often and do not be afraid of mistakes. Learn to express thoughts, and master the technique of constructing phrases with practice.

Ways to learn English in the shortest possible time

Continuing the topic of the article, I will share a technique for quickly learning English. I don’t know for what purpose you are learning a language, but if you find yourself on the pages of the site, then you need it.

As practice shows, people find themselves in awkward situations due to poor knowledge of the English language. We have to study the language as part of a school course, but the knowledge acquired at school is not enough for work and communication. Many people strive to become better at this issue.

It is easier to master any foreign language in a country whose residents are native speakers. But not everyone can leave the borders of their homeland for such a great goal. What should I do?

  1. If you can't afford a short trip to the States or England, recreate an English-speaking environment at home.
  2. Study phrases in your target language every day. Give preference to complex phrases containing phraseological units. A proverb or speech from a creative person will do.
  3. Place each phrase on shelves, rewrite it several times, print it on paper and hang it on the refrigerator door or in another visible place. Constantly pronounce the studied material out loud, using the correct intonation.
  4. Surround yourself with English. He should accompany you everywhere. The player will help with this. When listening to music or statements in a foreign language, you will initially have difficulty understanding. Later, learn to catch words that will eventually develop into understandable phrases.
  5. Download the original English-language series to your computer, but with subtitles. Before going to bed, watch the series, and the next day discuss it with your spouse or child.
  6. An e-book will be an assistant in quickly mastering English speech. Download from the Internet and read English-language works. The e-book provides a dictionary that will help you master complex literature, and a voice function will announce the correct pronunciation.
  7. Don't forget about learning English on Skype. Find a teacher on the Internet, discuss class times with him and communicate during the lessons. This technique has many advantages. You can choose a teacher yourself and agree on cooperation on favorable terms. It will offer a variety of interactive activities based on an individual approach.

Video training

The speed of achieving the goal and obtaining results depends on perseverance, the level of motivation and the course of study chosen in accordance with the capabilities. Work hard and everything will work out. As a result, you will become smarter and feel free anywhere in the world.

Benefits of learning English

Compatriots are of the opinion that thorough study of foreign languages is inappropriate. Popular films, literary works and scientific works have long been translated into Russian. There is no point in learning a second language for the sake of other spheres, areas and segments.

If you doubt the need to study foreign languages, read the material and learn about the benefits of learning English. I taught it for three years and find this skill useful. I read, communicate and perceive live speech. Over the years, I have accumulated quite a bit of experience.

Once you master the English language, you will be able to perceive the world differently. This will not happen immediately, but by improving your knowledge and skills, you will gain a generally accepted perception of the world.

Let's look at the main advantages.

  • Expanding your horizons . The English-speaking audience of the World Wide Web is larger than the Russian-speaking part. Outside the window is the information era, where it is considered the key to success not only in business, but also in life; foreign ownership expands opportunities for development.
  • Watching movies in original . As a result, it will be possible to enjoy the sound of the voice of your favorite actor, and not the translator who voices the roles. The play on English words and original humor will never escape.
  • Understanding Music . Popular charts are overflowing with foreign musical compositions. If you speak the language, you will be able to understand the meaning of the song, feel the composition and get to know the personality of the performer.
  • Communication with foreigners . Fluency in a language helps to unite cultures. People travel and communicate with residents of other countries. It is much nicer and more convenient when you can talk with foreigners. This makes the trip more enjoyable.
  • Opening the path to success and wealth . After reading several books about success, it turns out that not everything comes down to money. The success of Western people is based on their perception of the world and internal philosophy. You can read the translation of such books, but then you will only understand the essence of the teaching. Only the original helps to absorb knowledge.

When studying a foreign language, you discover a huge number of foreigners around you. I like to talk with people who have come to Russia from afar. It helps to make friends and makes the world a “home” place. If you don't speak the language yet, it's never too late to start learning.

Why is English an international language?

I will devote the final part of the article to the factors due to which English acquired the status of an international language. The English language has the fourth position in the world in terms of the number of speakers. But this does not prevent it from remaining international. What contributed to this, history will tell.

From 1066 until the 14th century, England was under the rule of French kings. As a result, the structure of Old English changed. It's about simplifying the grammar and adding new words.

Two centuries later, writing rules appeared that have survived to this day. At that time, 6 million people spoke English. Thanks to the English colonies, the number of native speakers increased and the formation of an international language began.

Britain was a maritime nation. After the discovery of America by Columbus, expeditions set off to the South American shores. The explorers were interested in valuables and treasures, and to ensure that each voyage ended in success, colonies were formed on new lands. The first such settlement was organized in 1607 in Virginia.

After some time, residents of many countries began to migrate to America in search of a better life. Since they spoke their native language, it was impossible to do without an international language, and its role went to English speech.

The English living in the new settlements brought traditions along with the language. Local residents were forced to speak it. British colonial policy contributed to the emergence of English as an international language.

We decided to learn English language? Of course, you made the right choice, because English language- the main language of international communication.

Most likely, you have already encountered the main problem with learning English- a huge number of textbooks and courses on the market, most of which are a waste of time and money. And if we add to this selfeducation and complete lack of initial knowledge language, then all this confuses a person, and he loses the desire to learn English. A wish- the main key to successfully learning any foreign language.

Listen to a lot of audio and video materials. Try to talk more. No one? Talk to yourself! Read, write. The site also has video materials. Perhaps there will be more later.

Please note that on the mobile version of the site the right menu collapses to the very bottom screen, and the top menu opens by pressing a button top right.

What kind of English are we learning? British or American?

Correct answer: both.

On the one hand, British refers to pronunciation rules set many years ago. Almost no one speaks it now, but everyone who studies English or tests pronunciation strives for it, incl. American actors (for example, Will Smith). Also, all textbooks have standard grammar and spelling of words. It turns out that almost everyone is learning British English. American grammar and spelling are slightly, very slightly different from British, so look for some textbooks on American English. very, very stupid.

On the other hand, British English also includes a special intonation that almost no one teaches, and it’s difficult to get used to. These lessons also do not teach intonation. It turns out that no matter how hard we try to pronounce it, we will still end up sounding more American English than British. Besides intonation, our speech apparatus is simply more similar to the American one. The video of the 1st lesson presents pure British English. The audio of the following lessons will sound more like American English. Otherwise, English is standard, there is no need to come up with ridiculous reasons why I should or should not learn these particular lessons. Just learn! I am responsible for quality! (Site author)

Knowledge of foreign languages is considered by many to be an incredible talent and almost a gift from the gods. But every polyglot knows that it’s more about hard work and personal interest than about natural abilities, much less a miracle. Anyone can do this if they choose the right training method. We will share tips on how to learn English for beginners today.

In the material we will consider all the nuances of the educational process: from the motivational part to lesson plans and transition to the next level. With us you will be 100% able to learn English from scratch on your own!

In any business, the main thing is to take the first step. That is, it is not easy, for example, to spontaneously take 10 minutes and play learning English words on a smartphone or practice grammar for half an hour. We are talking about purposefully starting to study English, that is, conducting regular classes, doing exercises, repeating the material covered, and so on. And here the problem arises: how to force yourself to do it?

The solution is simple - become sincerely interested in the English language. Setting goals will help develop interest in activities. Think about why you want to learn English. A variety of things can act as motivation, for example:

  • Go on a trip;
  • Make acquaintances with foreigners;
  • Move to another country;
  • Read books in the original;
  • Watch movies without translation.

And even the most banal thing is a burning shame that everyone around you understands English at least a little, but you don’t yet. This state of affairs needs to be corrected, right? So let this be your goal!

The main point when defining a goal is to understand that it is 100% important and necessary for you.

And as an additional motivator, before taking English lessons for beginners, set yourself the desired reward for achieving a successful result. For example, every 5 lessons completed give you the right to an extraordinary trip to your favorite restaurant or the purchase of some nice little thing.

The main thing is that the reward should not be missing the next lesson, because... Under no circumstances should the regularity of the process be disrupted. As a last resort, it is possible to reschedule a lesson on a free day, but not completely cancel it.

Goal and encouragement are effective mental tricks that are very important to use at the initial stage of learning English. Thanks to them, after just a few lessons, a program will be formed in your subconscious that learning English is very useful and profitable. Well, in the future, when you begin to understand the linguistic culture and features of the language, on the basis of these partly selfish motives, a natural interest in further study will develop.

At what level should I start learning English?

Before you start learning English, you need to determine your level of knowledge.

It’s one thing if you have never encountered this language and have only now decided to choose a course to independently study the basics of English at home. In this case, you completely learn English from scratch: starting with pronunciation of sounds, memorizing the alphabet, learning numbers, and so on. To master these skills, the Beginner level training program is used.

The situation is completely different if you have already covered some material in school lessons, university classes, or studied spoken English on your own. Then you are probably familiar with such basics of speech as:

  • Sounds, letters and numbers;
  • Personal pronouns;
  • Uses of the verb tobe;
  • Constructions This is/There are.

If this is indeed the case, then you have already moved from the beginner class to the second level of knowledge - Elementary (basic). With this level, you can learn English for beginners not from the very beginning, but from more complex topics, for example. Present Simple, degrees of comparison of adjectives, practice exercises on verb tenses, etc. But, if you are not confident in the quality of your knowledge, then it would be a good idea to repeat English from scratch.

How long does it take to master a basic English course?

We all learn English or another language in different ways. Some memorize vocabulary in 5 minutes, others quickly grasp the basics of grammar, and others have perfect pronunciation. Accordingly, for each student, some lessons are easy, while others are difficult and require more time.

The duration of the training course is also influenced by the chosen methodology. Classes with a teacher in a group usually last 3 months. Individual lessons can reduce this figure to two or even one month: this result is achieved through daily and long lessons. For self-learning, the time frame is completely blurred.

Thus, the time spent on learning English varies from person to person. On average, this period ranges from 3 to 6 months. You can speak specifically only if you know the curriculum and the student’s abilities. Our method, for example, offers beginners to master English from 0 on their own in about 4 months. Let's talk in more detail about this tutorial.

English for beginners - lesson plan for the entire course

This section presents the curriculum for the English language course for beginners. This is a step-by-step schedule with lesson topics in English for Beginner and Elementary students. The course lasts 4 months and ends with a transition to the next level of knowledge. If you plan to study the language on your own, then the material provided will be an excellent help in organizing classes.

General rules

Before we begin to study the plan, I would like to dwell on the important points of the educational process. To obtain a positive result, you must follow the following rules.

  1. Always speak English out loud . This point is important not only as working out the correct pronunciation, but also as a psychological factor. Be sure to pronounce all letters, words and sentences out loud, and then you will “get used” to speaking English. Otherwise, there is a risk of never speaking English at all. But why teach him then?
  2. Don’t skip “uncomfortable” topics. Yes, it happens that the material does not “go” at all, but this does not mean that you should abandon it. Nor does it mean that you need to understand it for 3 years until you become a “pro.” If you feel that the topic is difficult, then try to grasp at least its essence. The use of “inconvenient” construction in speech can be minimized, but you must know what it is about and why.
  3. Be sure to repeat what you have learned. Repetition is included in the plan and is just as important as learning new material. Only through timely repetition is information retained in memory for a long time.
  4. Keep your own grammar notebook. In the age of the Internet, many people prefer to learn the rules directly from the screen. But writing it out in your own hand is necessary, because this way the information passes through you and is better absorbed and remembered.
  5. Do exercises in writing. Again, the more you write, the more familiar you become with a “foreign” language: you remember the spelling of words, the order in a sentence, and the construction of grammatical structures. In addition, writing helps you focus more on completing the task and avoid making unnecessary mistakes.

This is a kind of code for a beginner “Englishman” who learns the language on his own from scratch. In fact, there is nothing complicated about these points, and after a few lessons, doing them will already become a habit. At the same time, we note that neglecting at least one point has a negative impact on the effectiveness of training, and can reduce all efforts to nothing.

First month

The first English lessons for beginners are lessons of a more educational and playful nature. The emphasis is not on the amount of material, but on getting used to the new language, creating a positive atmosphere, and developing interest in classes. Learning English from scratch requires hard work, attention and patience. If you are determined to master English, then set aside time for this, be patient, and pay maximum attention. And the most important thing is your desire. It’s not for nothing that they say that if you really want something, everything will work out. If there is a desire, there is also a will, a desire, the main thing is to put effort into it. How to learn English on your own from scratch?

If you studied English at school, then you are lucky: you already have a certain foundation, some basics, you speak fluently and can create a dialogue on an everyday topic. We want to give some tips and rules to beginners, those who have taken up English from scratch. By following these recommendations, you will not notice how within a short period of time you will be able to read and translate, and then speak English fluently.

The most important thing is, once you make a decision, don’t hesitate and don’t back down. Everything will definitely work out. And in order not to scare away your desire to learn a foreign language, start simple. A small number of words every day, reading short texts, composing simple sentences. But the most important thing is to strictly follow some rules:

  • Tip #1: Regularity

At school, only two hours a week are allocated for studying a foreign language. This is very little, because from one lesson to another the student has already forgotten everything. To really learn a foreign language, and especially English, you need to study for an hour every day. Read something, listen to something, translate, etc. Therefore, spend at least 5-10 minutes a day reading and doing exercises.

  • Tip #2: Complexity

Learning English should be comprehensive: read the text, translate it with a dictionary. With a dictionary, not Google translator! Listen to the audio with the text or exercise. If you don't understand a word, rewind it again. Pause and repeat the words after the speaker. Do some writing assignments. And so every day.

  • Tip #3: Working with a dictionary

This is a very important point. Don't try to translate words or entire text in Google Translator, it won't do you any good. The dictionary gives us a transcription of the word, that is, its pronunciation, and it also trains our visual memory. In schools, translation from English into Russian is most often practiced. Translation from Russian into English is almost completely overlooked, but it is this kind of translation that allows you to open the dictionary more often and learn more words.

  • Tip #4: Working out loud

It is important to hear foreign speech so that it is stored in memory and in the brain. Watch programs in English, listen to exercises and dialogues, watch films and TV series, preferably with subtitles. It is also important to hear yourself when learning a language. This means that you must read out loud, repeat words and sentences out loud after the speaker, you can even write by dictating out loud to yourself.

  • Tip #5: Reading

This is a very important element. Read aloud not only texts from the textbook, but gradually move on to short stories, and then to longer works by English authors. In this way, you will become familiar with English literature and get used to the so-called “real” English language. Give yourself tasks to copy text on your own, this will train your visual memory.

So, these are the main tips that we wanted to give to beginners in English. Follow them and you will succeed.
What do you need to do to effectively learn English?

What should beginners do on their own?

Of course, it is better to study any language, even your native one, with someone. This is necessary in order to master the language more easily. Classes together or in a small group allow you to compose dialogues, therefore, talk, hear yourself and others, and develop speech. But if you are forced to study on your own, it doesn’t matter. Follow our tips above and let us give you a few more recommendations.

Learning English from scratch requires clarity and regularity. As we have already said, spend an hour or at least half an hour of your time every day. Make yourself a study schedule for every day. Divide each lesson into sections: the first 10 minutes are reading and translation, the next 10 are writing, another 10 are listening, etc. Over time, you will develop a system, and this system will help you with your regularity.

Use textbooks. If you have the opportunity, then get not only ours, but also English language textbooks. Complete the tasks and exercises that are offered there. Diversify your activities by listening to English-language music. Try to catch the words of the song, translate the lyrics.

Why is vocabulary work important?

It is clear that any language consists of words. The more words we know, the richer our speech. Therefore, pay maximum attention and time to this aspect of your studies. Don’t try to learn 30-40 words in one lesson. It's difficult and there's no point. Because then no more than two or three words will remain in your memory. It’s better to take up to ten words, it will be more useful.

What is the easiest way to learn new words?

  • Copy them in your notebook
  • Translate with a dictionary
  • Read aloud several times
  • Find sentences with these words in the text; translate these sentences
  • Make up phrases with these words
  • Make up sentences with these words
  • Repeat words
  • Repeat the words, closing the notebook.

That's it, you already know them! Start the next lesson by repeating the words you have learned, thus reinforcing them once again.

To make studying fun and interesting, keep bright notebooks with views of London and other UK cities. Use bright stickers. Keep a colorful diary in which you will record what you have already learned and what you still have to learn. Read texts and dialogues with intonation, as in the theater, this will lift your spirits.

Make your classes bright and you will succeed! Good luck to you!
