A selection of self-teaching books on the English language. Listening to English speech

English can rightfully be called the language of “world communication” - more than half of the population of planet Earth speaks it. However, English now is not just a means of communication and a way to broaden your horizons.

English is the key to success, since at all international events, communication takes place in English and not a single successful company with a worldwide reputation will hire a specialist without at least knowledge of English.

In the age of the Internet and high technology, to the classic sources of information, such as books, magazines, dictionaries, etc., various audio and video aids, webinars, as well as online games and tutorials have been added for easy and quick language acquisition.

Which method to choose depends on:

  • learning goals,
  • desired level of knowledge,
  • required skill: reading, writing, speaking or understanding language, etc.

Having decided what goal you are pursuing, choose a priority method of learning.

But, in any case, it is better to systematically develop your knowledge in all areas, since in English, as in any other, the beauty and culture of speech depends on compliance with all requirements: grammatical, phonetic, semantic, spelling, etc.

When and how is it better to start learning English?

In the field of education, the main indicator is not the age of the student, but his desire and desire for knowledge, willingness to work independently, his endurance and willpower.

Of course, the easiest way to start learning English is in childhood. Words learned in preschool and primary school age leave a memory for many years.

Over time, a preschooler’s rich vocabulary can easily be “transformed” into literate speech structures, and he himself will not notice how he has learned to speak a foreign language.

In this regard, we can say with confidence that age does not matter in learning English.

When learning a language on your own, the main indicator of readiness for learning is a person’s awareness, the presence of clear goals, as well as the strength and capabilities to achieve them.

If we touch on the issue of age, then the only thing it will affect is the way the information is presented.

  1. Determine the purpose for which you want to learn the language.
  • For example, if you want to learn English to conduct business correspondence with business partners, then you will need to pay more attention to grammar and spelling, learn the rules of writing and conducting official correspondence in English. The best books to study are business magazines, and the best way to study is to write letters.
  • If you want to feel like you belong among the English-speaking population, are planning to travel or make a foreign friend, then you need to pay attention to phonetics, spelling, semantics and lexicology. The best books to study are periodicals and media, works of contemporary writers, as well as various English-language youth forums, and the best way to study is to talk a lot.
  • If you want to move to work abroad, then you will need to work on all points of language learning, as well as learn professional vocabulary. The same situation applies to those who wish to study in an English-speaking institution.

However, you should not focus on only one direction; in any case, in the process of communication you will have to both write and speak. Develop all areas evenly.

  1. Determine the period within which you want to learn the language. This is necessary in order to be able to create a curriculum, or simply determine the number of words required to be memorized every day.
  2. Create a study plan. Unfortunately, many people neglect this point, considering the curriculum a waste of time. However, only with the help of a plan you will be able to:
  • Firstly, do not miss all the topics necessary to study;
  • Secondly, analyze the dynamics of your learning.

The curriculum is both a way to organize the learning process and the simplest way of self-control.

  1. Make a schedule for learning the language. Time management, as a culture of planning personal activities, encourages all people who want to achieve success in the areas they are implementing to draw up a plan for their day and keep a list of necessary things to do. This is important not only from the point of view of the correct organization of working time, but also from the point of view of human nature - the brain tries to complete the task written down on paper first.

How to start learning English from scratch on your own?

Today, among English language teachers there are many opinions about: what is the best way to start learning the language?

Many refer to the fact that it is necessary to first learn the rules of using the language, and then expand your vocabulary, learn to write, read and speak.

There is also the opposite opinion - just like learning your native language, you first need to “create” a vocabulary, and then learn to read, speak and write.

Which method to choose is up to you. But the truth is unchanged, the main thing is to teach.

If you do not have any understanding of the language and your level is “zero”, i.e. Beginner, then it is better to start studying it with children’s literature and textbooks for children 7-10 years old.

Unlike books for preschoolers, the information presented in them is not so primitive.

If your level is Elementary, which is no longer Beginner, but your maximum knowledge of the language is the phrase “London the capital of great Britain,” which is no longer small, but also not enough, you can start learning the language from books for older children.

However, in the first and second cases it is necessary to learn from the basics.

The main points of study are:

  1. Reading rules;
  2. Pronunciation rules;
  3. Grammar rules;
  4. Creation and expansion of vocabulary.
  5. Learning the rules of reading English

Studying the rules of reading should begin with studying the English alphabet. This is necessary in order to learn how to correctly pronounce sounds, with the peculiarities inherent in a given language.

You should also pay attention to mastering the rules of pronunciation of consonants and main letter combinations. Without this basic knowledge, you will not be able to read correctly.

Clarifying the pronunciation of words

In English, like in any other language, there are exceptions. Including the rules of reading and pronunciation of words. Many words that came into English from other languages do not follow any pronunciation rules.

Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to this category of words and learn their pronunciation, as they say, “by heart.”

Formation of vocabulary

Contrary to popular belief, you need to expand your vocabulary not by memorizing individual words, but by memorizing phrases and even entire sentences.

This method is the most effective and, due to the fact that the word is remembered in its context, allows you to learn not 30 words in the same time, as would be the case in the first case, but 2,3 or 4 times more.

Also, this technique also helps to remember several meanings of the same word at once.

You can start simple:

  • Write down, translate into English and memorize your most common phrases and everyday sentences;
  • Learn English poems and children's stories;
  • Learn the lyrics to your favorite songs in a foreign language.

Get yourself your own personal dictionary and write down the words and phrases you learn in it. Create a special section with words that are difficult to memorize and pay more attention to it.

Studying grammar

Grammar is rightfully considered one of the most difficult sections in learning English. However, this opinion is wrong. There are not so many rules in English compared to others, which is why it received its status as a “language of international communication”.

However, the rules do not need to be memorized, they need to be understood. So instead of memorizing them, do as many practical grammar exercises as possible.

View news in English

In order to learn to understand English speech, you need to not only listen to it, but also read it. The easiest way is to read the news feed of one of the English newspapers.

This is useful not only from the point of view of learning the language, but also from the point of view of general development and knowledge of the world, as well as foreign culture. The news is written in accessible and simple language, it contains many frequently used words in everyday life, therefore, reading the news will be simple and useful for you.

Read simple texts

Reading is one of the main ways to learn any language. Reading books will help you speak beautifully. Of course, all the most beautiful phrases and phraseological units for beautiful speech are contained in classical literature.

However, reading it requires a large vocabulary, therefore, at the first stages of learning the language, read simple texts.

Install useful apps

Today, on the Internet, as well as in any mobile software store, there are many applications that allow you to learn English anywhere and at any time.

It is convenient because it is very simple and mobile. You can learn a language while waiting in line at the doctor's office, while commuting to work, or waiting for a friend in the park.

The most popular applications on the market are:

  • Words– the purpose of the application is to increase vocabulary. The learning process takes place through various games, as well as interesting tasks aimed at memory training.
  • Easy ten– the principle of operation of the application is similar to Words, but here, in addition to visual memorization of words, it is also possible to listen to their correct pronunciation, which develops auditory memory.
  • Busuu– the application allows you to study speech structures rather than individual words, which is considered a more effective way of memorizing a language and expanding your vocabulary. The application provides for the writing of short texts and their subsequent verification.
  • Polyglot– the application has a rich base of teaching aids that accompany each task. The intended purpose is to study grammar, but also to expand vocabulary.
  • English: speaking American– the purpose of this application is to increase your level of perception and understanding of English speech by listening to dialogues, composing and translating them.

Study online

The Internet can also be useful for learning English. On the World Wide Web, many sites are ready to open their pages to you, designed with the goal of helping you, for a reasonable fee, become a real polyglot.

An undeniable advantage of online resources for learning English is the inexpensive cost of subscription (about 1000 rubles per year) and a fairly extensive content of teaching aids: rules, tasks and games that will help, if not simplify the process of learning the language, then certainly make it more interesting.

The “top” online tutorials are:

  1. Lingualeo– the resource contains many tasks and games, allowing you to create a personal program for learning the language. The intended purpose is to study English grammar, as well as develop vocabulary and skills in perceiving English speech.
  1. Duolingo– the principle of operation of the resource is similar to Lingualeo. And the main purpose is the same - to study English grammar and consolidate the acquired knowledge. However, its advantage is the ability to study words not separately from each other, but in context, which is the most effective way to expand your vocabulary.
  1. Puzzle-english is an online gaming resource for language learning, similar to Lingualeo and Duolingo. However, its intended purpose is to develop listening skills. In this regard, the main educational gaming content on the site are audio and video games.

Our century, rightfully, is considered a century of opportunities, in the field of education - first of all. All kinds of programs, tutorials, games and applications try to diversify the boring process of learning English and improve it.

The Internet is replete with various teaching aids available for download, and in any bookstore you will find many books on the English language.

Now, to learn English, you don’t need to attend expensive courses; you just need to have a goal, stock up on the necessary literature, in any format convenient for you, and consistently move towards your goal - to become a native speaker.

Have you decided to learn English on your own? Then English is simply vital for you. I decided to make a detailed analysis of the most successful, in my humble opinion, self-teachers of the English language. For each benefit, I will give advantages and disadvantages, as I previously did in the article about the most successful ones.

Basic English course.

K. Eckersley's basic English course is the Russian version of the famous self-instruction manual 'Essential English for foreign students', created by the luminary of British philology. The emphasis in the textbook is on oral and written speech. All new material is given in connection with what has already been studied, so as a result you will receive systematized knowledge of the English language. The book contains more than seven hundred pages, after which you will master English at a good level. The tutorial comes with a disc for practicing phonetic material.

Advantages. The material is presented with humor - some of the stories are actually very funny. Lots of examples. Sufficient amount of exercise. Interesting factual material. Detailed explanations. Availability of sound.

Flaws. The manual is black and white, the illustrations are not interesting - therefore, if you are used to good colorful textbooks, this tutorial will make you sad. There is not enough grammatical material, although it will be just right for those who study English solely for communication.

Self-teacher of the English language: modern methods of intensive teaching.

This manual is intended for those who want to quickly master the most popular of foreign languages - English. The tutorial is built on the ESHKO method, which means that the transcription of all words is transmitted in Russian letters, which will allow the tutorial to be used even by those who are absolute beginners in learning languages.

The manual consists of three parts. In the first, you will learn to read English words, in the second, you will get acquainted with grammar, and in the third, with communication situations on certain topics.

Advantages. All exercises in the tutorial contain answers, which means you can control your progress yourself. Words that you need to remember in order to successfully progress in your study are marked with a special icon - so you won’t miss anything important!

Flaws. Among the possible disadvantages, I would include the very construction of the textbook, where first you deal exclusively with phonetics, then with grammar, and only at the last stage do you use both in order to learn to speak and write. There is no sound accompaniment.

English language. Intensive training course.

This tutorial is not a tutorial at all in the usual sense. This is more of a grammar guide for those who want to figure it out on their own. And not even in grammar in general, but in the use of English tenses. I would advise using this manual as a supplement to any other tutorial. Why am I writing about this tutorial in this article? Simply because Chernenko’s book can become an excellent guide to English tenses for those who want to understand them without outside help.

Advantages. But the use of tenses is considered perfectly. Everything is clear, accessible, with examples and exercises to practice. All exercises come with answers, so you can check your progress.

Flaws. It is unlikely that an intensive course of study should be limited to a detailed examination of the tenses of the English language. The author was clearly too clever with the title of the manual.

Self-instruction manual of the English language.

A. Petrova’s self-instruction manual differs from the above-mentioned ones in that the author does not set herself the task of teaching you to speak English. The purpose of this manual is to teach reading and understanding what is read. However, it is worth noting that the material is well selected and structured, so those who conscientiously master this tutorial will be able to explain themselves normally in standard situations. After studying this manual, you will master more than 2000 words and understand the most necessary grammatical structures. The tutorial includes 26 large lessons that cover various topics.

Advantages. Many lessons have optional sections aimed at teaching speaking. There are keys for all tests. The structure of the lessons allows you to obtain good systematized knowledge.

Flaws . There are no answers to test exercises after each new topic.

Sound tutorial for English conversation.

Shubin's audio tutorial consists of several books - an initial and a basic course. The manual is designed for an adult and will be extremely useful for those who plan to live or travel in English-speaking countries. The difference between this manual is that it is a system of sound exercises with sound keys. By studying English using this tutorial, you will learn to perceive live spoken language, which will be very useful when traveling.

Advantages. A good guide for those who like to listen a lot and understand spoken language well. An excellent guide for those who want to learn to understand spoken English.

Flaws. Shubin’s self-instruction manual was released in shaggy 1976, so many things will seem primitive to you. Some information is already hopelessly outdated.

New cool English tutorial.

Author. Dragunkin A.

Not so new - 2005, and not as cool as the author would like, but still worth mentioning, Dragunkin's self-instruction manual is an example of the author's statement on English grammar. The manual can be used as a supplement to any classic tutorial with texts, situations, dialogues and exercises, because Dragunkin only has rules.

Advantages. The textbook differs from other language grammar reference books. The presence of the author is very clearly felt here. Lots of motivating moments. A lot of informative information not only in terms of language learning.

Flaws. All material is replete with underlining, bolding, and numerous exclamation marks. It feels like Dragunkin himself is yelling in your ear: LEARN! LET'S! YOU CAN! SALAGA! I WILL SHOW YOU WHERE THE CRASHES HAVE THE WINTER! – very much for an amateur. A lot of PR for the author.

Fast English for energetic lazy people.

Author. Dragunkin A.

Another tutorial by Dragunkin. Like the previous one, it differs significantly from the tutorials of other authors. Dragunkin promises miracles of quick and high-quality learning of English. Of course, I doubt that everything will be so rosy, but the textbook is not bad. I would not recommend it as the only way to study, but reading in addition to Petrova will be very useful.

Advantages. Easy to read. Sometimes interesting, sometimes even with humor, sometimes even quite good.

Flaws. I already wrote about them in the analysis of the previous tutorial. But this is the author's style, perhaps someone will like it.

Self-instruction manual of the English language. Systematic fundamental course.

Author. Komarov.A.

The tutorial is aimed at 2 levels: beginners or intermediate. This tutorial implements the author's concept of teaching foreign languages. Moving from simple to complex, you can master English at a very decent level. The textbook is simple and accessible. It is perfect for independent work, even for those who do not know a single word of English.

Advantages. Parallel presentation of the material: you will study the rules of syntax mixed with morphological rules - that is, this is a full-fledged textbook, not a reference book. Lots of diagrams, diagrams, useful graphics.

Flaws. There is no sound accompaniment.

An English language self-teacher is a great way to learn a foreign language without spending extra money on a teacher and time on attending courses. Today there are many ways to practice language on your own. For those who want to speak English, there are numerous online tutorials that will help you develop the ability to read, speak and write English at a good level.
For self-study, you need to choose the appropriate level of English learning - elementary (basic), intermediate (normal) and advanced.

Even if you start learning a language from scratch, you can soon begin to participate in conversations and understand phrases by ear.
Training videos will help with this, where you can listen to dialogues in two versions - Russian and English. Digital technologies allow you to do a lot - carry out an online translation of an incomprehensible word, scroll through the desired moment a certain number of times, test your knowledge through testing. It is also convenient to download audio files to your phone or MP3 player
and listen to it on the way to work or while walking.
A good way to memorize new words and phrases is to listen to foreign music, watch films in original dubbing (with subtitles possible), chat with English-speaking interlocutors, and correspond with English people.
It is also important to use traditional textbooks and copybooks that will help you understand grammatical rules and consolidate the acquired knowledge based on professionally designed exercises. Such textbooks can be downloaded in text form on the Internet. It is convenient to check the correctness of completed tasks using ready-made answers. It is better to study with a fresh mind - in the morning, before going to work. Throughout the day, you can look in the dictionary and repeat new words. In the evening you can do big tasks, exercises, listen to audio files and watch videos.
The main thing is that the process of learning a language brings pleasure. Everyone knows what time of day is most convenient and optimal for studying.
The basic rule of self-learning foreign languages is daily, regular repetition, practice and application in real life. It is better to exercise a little every day than once a week all day. Programs and numerous materials will help with this, which will form a whole complex - a self-teacher of the English language at home.

A wish- the main key to successfully learning any foreign language.

So, what does the site offer you for success? learning English from scratch?

First of all, especially for the entry level in the form online lessons A wonderful self-instruction manual by K. B. Vasiliev “Easy English” was designed. Lessons on this tutorial are perfect for children, because the texts are presented from popular English children's fairy tales, such as “Alice in Wonderland”, “Winnie the Pooh and Everything Everything”, etc. Additionally, typos and some inaccuracies were corrected, and added free audio for the entire course. And doing the exercises is not at all difficult, because for this there are special forms for entering text, as well as answer keys. To view the answer, hover your mouse over the key: . You can only peek back after you have completely completed the exercise! If you have any questions, you can ask them under the lesson as a comment.

Please note that there is no need to rush and jump to the next lesson immediately after completing the current one. Move on to the next lesson when you are confident that you have mastered the material in the current lesson. fully.

Further parallel With the study of the audio course above, you can also study the perhaps simpler Assimil audio course. The page with audio courses also contains higher-level courses, as well as an interesting tutorial on how to work with audio.

How have you studied so much information and are still confused about verb tenses? Dont be upset, verb tenses in English- this is the most difficult part of it. After all, there are not 3 of them, as in the Russian language, but as many as 12! Especially for easier understanding and assimilation of tenses, the following section on effective lessons by S.P. Dugin for beginners was created.

Verb tenses can also be studied in the English grammar section. Initially, grammar lessons were intended for intermediate students, but translations have been added to them, and now they can be studied by slightly less advanced students. In this section Very There are many lessons, it will help you find answers to many questions, so don't skip it. Proceed to study it only when you are ready. And in lessons for beginners there will periodically be links to specific grammar lessons from this section.

Have you studied all this already? Well, you give it! Congratulations! What to do next? And then you will have even more self-study. Unfortunately, from an intermediate level it is difficult to build any path for study; build it yourself according to your interests. It takes a lot of practice. Listen to a lot of audio and video materials. Try to talk more. No one? Talk to yourself! Read, write. The site also has video materials. Perhaps there will be more later.

Please note that on the mobile version of the site the right menu collapses to the very bottom screen, and the top menu opens by pressing a button top right.

What kind of English are we learning? British or American?

Correct answer: both.

On the one hand, British refers to pronunciation rules set many years ago. Almost no one speaks it now, but everyone who studies English or tests pronunciation strives for it, incl. American actors (for example, Will Smith). Also, all textbooks have standard grammar and spelling of words. It turns out that almost everyone is learning British English. American grammar and spelling are slightly, very slightly different from British, so look for some textbooks on American English. very, very stupid.

On the other hand, British English also includes a special intonation that almost no one teaches, and it’s difficult to get used to. These lessons also do not teach intonation. It turns out that no matter how hard we try to pronounce it, we will still end up sounding more American English than British. Besides intonation, our speech apparatus is simply more similar to the American one. The video of the 1st lesson presents pure British English. The audio of the following lessons will sound more like American English. Otherwise, English is standard, there is no need to come up with ridiculous reasons why I should or should not learn these particular lessons. Just learn! I am responsible for quality! (Site author)

English language learning

If you have never learned English or you once studied at school, but completely forgot everything, even the alphabet, and now you have decided to start learning English from scratch, then our advice on where to start and how to move may be useful to you. The first and most important thing is to understand how much you need the language, why you need it, and whether you have enough resources to learn the language.

Motivation

Motivation should be your driving force; without it, you will not be able to practice the language daily for a long time. Without daily practice it is impossible to master this huge layer of knowledge. If there is no obvious motivation, but there is a burning desire to learn the language, then you should think about what knowledge of the language will give you - maybe it’s a new prestigious job or the opportunity to read specialized literature on topics that interest you, or maybe you travel a lot and want to fully communicate with people around the world or correspond with foreign friends.
Your motivation may still be in the subconscious. Try to extract it from there, it will play a decisive role in your successful progress in mastering the English language.

Choosing a teaching method

Your next step should be to choose teaching methods or teachers. Now students have access to very good language materials and a large number of teachers who are ready to study via Skype with students from all over the world. Ideal, of course, is to find a good teacher who is a native speaker. But not everyone can afford such opportunities, and some simply want to study independently and for free, at a convenient time, without any stress, according to their own schedule. Then you need to choose a system that you will follow.

Learning English from scratch takes time

Plan time for studying, you need to study every day, at least 15 - 20 minutes, but it’s better to set aside an hour for studying. In our selection of articles “English from scratch” you will find materials for beginners, audio recordings and videos, exercises, a large number of examples, explanations, as well as links to resources that will help you progress faster.

When choosing your study resources, make sure you like the materials. This is important, all polyglots talk about it. Interest plays a major role in language acquisition. It allows you to achieve more with less effort. Just imagine that you need to learn or translate a text on some boring topic for you, but you will fall asleep after the first phrase! On the contrary, if you come across an interesting book, you will definitely find time to read it. Go ahead, friends, devote your time and attention to the language, and you will raise your English from scratch to fluency. Good luck to all!
