Higher than a skyscraper. Tallest skyscraper in the world

Royal Tower, Exceeding the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates by 167 meters, it is being built in Saudi Arabia and will be the first building on the planet whose height is close to a kilometer. The $1.2 billion project, located in Jeddah, will feature luxury condominiums, office space, an observatory, a Four Seasons hotel and the world's tallest terrace on the 157th floor (still quite a long way from the top of the building, by the way). Construction of the skyscraper officially began last year, and the building is due to be completed in 2019.

2. Shanghai Tower

Construction of a 121-story Shanghai Tower in China, costing $4.2 billion, which began in 1993, was completed earlier this year and finishing work is now underway. Now it is the second tallest building in the world, but the official opening will be in 2015. However, millions of people have already seen the view from above, thanks to breathtaking images and videos taken by two Russian daredevils who illegally reached the summit last year, which went viral on the Internet. The multifunctional skyscraper consists of nine different vertical zones and is surrounded by a layer of transparent glass covering to protect from weather conditions and provide natural ventilation.

3. Dubai Pearl

Between designing artificial islands in the shape of parts of the world, the largest shopping mall known to man, and, of course, the tallest building in the world, someone decided that Dubai should have a luxury building that looked like an ordinary apartment building with its legs spread out ominously. Construction of a 73-story Dubai Pearl overlooking the Persian Gulf started in 2009 and is due to be completed in 2016. The planned "inner city" will feature four towers connected by a sky bridge and a premium 1,800-seat theater that will host the Dubai International Film Festival.

4. Agora Garden

Already in 2016 Agora Garden in Taipei, a double helix-shaped building will be a compromise between the creations of Mother Nature and man. The winding 20-storey luxury building will be green in every sense of the word, with balconies on each floor supporting gardens and integrated life-support systems including solar panels and rainwater recycling.

5. World One

When construction is completed next year, the 117-story skyscraper World One will be the tallest residential building on the planet and by far the tallest building in Mumbai, almost twice the size of the 61-storey Imperial Tower currently holding the latter title. World One will be home to some of Mumbai's wealthiest residents and will feature 300 luxury three- and four-bedroom apartments (prices start from $1.5 million) designed by Giorgio Armani's Armani/Casa studio. Funnily enough, World One won't be able to hold the title of tallest building in Mumbai for long as the upcoming India Tower will have 126 floors.

6. King Abdullah Petroleum Science and Research Center (KARSARC)

Closest to the ground on this entire list, but no less mind-blowing KARSARC in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, looks more like a James Bond villain's lair than a multinational nonprofit hub. The futuristic crystal-shaped design is the brainchild of iconic Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid, who based the design on an interlocking hexagonal cage. Construction on the project began in 2009 and so far only the steel frame has been completed, so it is unclear when the facility will open.

7. Zhongnan center in Suzhou

Construction of the 730-meter, 138-story center in Suzhou, China has only recently begun, and it still has a long, long way to go. But if the $4.5 billion project is completed on schedule in 2020, it will be the tallest building in China and the third tallest building in the world. The tower, containing a hotel, offices and residential space, will be located next to the nearly completed 69-story Gateway of the East skyscraper, which, as has been repeatedly noted, resembles an oversized pair of trousers.

8. Lotte World Tower

Significantly higher than all other buildings in Seoul, South Korea, a 556-meter, 123-story skyscraper will soar above the horizon Lotte World Tower, when it will be finished in 2016. The building will contain (from bottom to top): shops, offices, apartments, hotels and an observation deck at the top. It will also surpass North Korea's extraordinary pyramid-shaped Ryugyong Hotel to become the tallest building on the Korean Peninsula.

9. Dawang Mountain Resort

Tired of hotels that don't gracefully float between two cliffs above an abandoned quarry and lake? Chinese mountain resort Dawang will be waiting for you from 2016. Stretching 170 meters in length, the resort will include an "ice world of entertainment", an indoor ski complex, a water park and hanging gardens.

10. Songjiang Hotel

Obviously, this hotel, basking among rocks and lakes, is next on the list of high-end holiday destinations in China. Like the Dawang mountain resort, the hotel "Songjiang" is located in a quarry, and the hotel, located not far from Shanghai, will be built right on the walls of the quarry, and a waterfall will flow down its facade. Well, if you can’t enjoy the view from one of the upper floors, go to the lower ones - they will be under water.

10 Unique Innovative Homes

A 15th-century cathedral in the Netherlands has been turned into a bookshop.

Cathedrals, as a rule, inspire a feeling of detachment from everything earthly. The huge structures and intricate architecture are simply mesmerizing. This 15th-century cathedral in Zwolle, the Netherlands, didn't give up and took it to the next level. The existing building was converted into a bookshop with an additional 700 square meters of retail space. This sounds like a bookworm's dream come true.

10 Most Amazing Cinemas Around the World

The deepest pool in the world

Opened in 2010, the 828-meter Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai has become the tallest building on the planet, a symbol of the triumph of engineering genius. But she is not destined to be a record holder for long. In different parts of the Earth, preparations are already in full swing for the construction of even more tall and complex skyscrapers, each of which has a height at least a kilometer.

Sky City. China

The Sky City Tower, although it will have a height of just under a kilometer, is likely to be the first to break the Burj Khalifa's record of 828 meters from the base to the top of the spire. The project involves the construction of a stepped 838-meter tower in the Chinese city of Changsha, on 202 floors of which there will be residential apartments, hotels, educational institutions, hospitals, offices, and shops.

But what is interesting is not so much the record height of Sky City, but the incredibly fast pace of construction of this building. The Broad Sustainable Building company, which will build it, is known throughout the world for its construction in just a few days. She plans to build this skyscraper in just 90 days plus 120 days of preparing the site for construction.

Construction of this skyscraper was supposed to begin in the summer of 2013, but has so far been postponed. True, preparatory work on the site where Sky City will grow is gradually underway.

Azerbaijan Tower. Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan also wants to build the world's tallest skyscraper. Growing revenues from the sale of oil and gas make it possible to implement very large social and infrastructure projects in this country, for example, the construction of the artificial Khazar Islands archipelago, the high-rise dominant of which will be a 1050-meter tower.

The construction of the archipelago began several years ago. Now the first public, residential and office buildings have grown on it, and the construction of the Azerbaijan Tower itself is expected to begin in 2015.

The project’s investors promise to put the Azerbaijan Tower building into operation in 2019, and to finish the entire artificial archipelago by 2020.

Kingdom Tower. Saudi Arabia

But still, most of the super-tall building projects are planned to be implemented in rich Arab countries. For example, Saudi Arabia lives with the idea of building the tallest building in the world - they are haunted by the Burj Khalifa in the neighboring United Arab Emirates.

Construction of the Kingdom Tower skyscraper began in 2013 in the city of Jeddah. The height of this 167-story building will be just over 1000 meters. The exact data is still unknown - they will appear only after the facility is put into operation. Investors are afraid to make them public, fearing that someone will build a structure just a few meters higher and break the record.

Kingdom Tower will be the centerpiece of the Kingdom Center mixed-use development, a $20 billion city of residential, office, hotel, retail and entertainment developments.

Madinat al-Hareer. Kuwait

They want to build a kilometer-long skyscraper in Kuwait. In June 2014, a building project called Madinat al-Hareer, whose height will be 1001 meters, was finally approved there.

The name "Madinat al-Hareer" translates as "Silk City", which alludes to Kuwait's glorious history as one of the world's silk trading centers. It was originally planned that this skyscraper would be built by 2016, but, apparently, this deadline will be postponed by at least two years.

Dubai City Tower. United Arab Emirates

Dubai is looking at the projects listed above with caution - they could break the height record of the Burj Dubai skyscraper in the very near future. But, on the other hand, in this city they don’t sit with their hands folded. There, work is in full swing to create a project for the world's first two-kilometer building.

The Eiffel Tower is used as the basis for the design of Dubai City Tower. But the dimensions of this Arab skyscraper will be seven and a half times larger than the French prototype. The height of the future tower will be 2400 meters.

The 400 floors of the Dubai City Tower will be connected not only by elevators, but also by a vertical train that can travel at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and transport people from the bottom floor to the top in a matter of seconds.

Investors and authors of the Dubai City Tower skyscraper project expect it to be commissioned in 2025. The construction estimate has not been disclosed.

The first skyscraper was built in the USA in 1885. Since then, the planet has been gripped by gigantomania - every year buildings are getting taller, and more and more people want to look at the world from a bird's eye view.

Today we will tell you how to get to the observation decks of the tallest skyscrapers in the world and what you can do there.

Burj Khalifa. Dubai, UAE

The Burj Khalifa is a record building for the number of titles: the largest number of floors, the highest restaurant, the highest elevator, but most importantly, it is the tallest building in the history of mankind. The height of the skyscraper reaches 828 meters!

The observation deck of the skyscraper is called “At the top”. Of course, it is not located at the very top of the Burj Khalifa, but from a height of 555 meters the view is no less impressive: visitors will see the artificial archipelago “The World”, the Palm Islands, Bastakiya and the Persian Gulf. In the closed part of the observation deck you can hide from the scorching sun, buy souvenirs made of pure gold, and even travel back in time - special telescopes will show what Dubai looked like 20 years ago!

The ascent to the observation deck lasts only one minute, accompanied by a light show and intense music. As one visitor writes, “the Burj Khalifa elevator ride is an attraction in itself. You can feel like a hero from a Hollywood action movie!”

By the way, about cinema. Fans of Mission: Impossible should definitely visit the mini-exhibition of the film, which is located a couple of floors below the observation deck. Several scenes from the penultimate part were filmed in the Burj Khalifa.

Shanghai Tower. Shanghai, China

The Shanghai Tower became famous all over the world even before its opening - in 2014, roofers from Russia climbed to the top of the skyscraper and posted a video of their ascent on the Internet.

You can appreciate the desperation of the guys from the observation deck of the Tower, which is located at an altitude of 561 meters. This is the highest observation deck in the world, it even beat the “At the top” of the Burj Khalifa! According to visitors, “from such a height it seems that not only the whole of Shanghai, but the whole world is at your feet.” The transparent floor and glass walls with a slope add a sharpness to the sensations.

Climbing to such a height will not be difficult - the Shanghai Tower has 106 elevators moving at a speed of 16 meters per second. During the ascent, visitors are shown a video about the construction of a skyscraper, but it is difficult to make out what they are talking about - the speed hurts their ears.

Before the opening of “At the top” in Burj Khalifa, the observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial Center was the highest on the planet - 472 meters above ground level. Thrill-seekers will appreciate the glass roof of the site and balconies with transparent floors.

If the heights make your head spin, you can take a break and watch an interactive film about the construction of the Opener or get acquainted with the history of Shanghai with the help of special media presentations.

The ascent to the observation deck begins with an interactive video about the construction of New York - visitors will see how the first wooden houses grew in place of a dense forest, how one-story buildings were replaced by skyscrapers. The video will not have time to get boring - the elevator rises to a height of 390 meters in just one minute.

On the observation deck, visitors will find a typical attraction for this kind of place – a glass floor. True, here it is just a computer simulator. But the view of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan and Governor's Island is real. Taipei 101. Taipei, Taiwan

Taiwan can hardly be called a good place for building skyscrapers: earthquakes often occur here due to tectonic faults in the crust. However, Taipei 101 is considered one of the safest buildings in the world - during construction they used an external frame to protect against earthquakes and a damper - a huge hanging ball that prevents the skyscraper from swaying during strong hurricanes. The building is equipped with the fastest elevators in the world - the lifting speed reaches 18 meters per second. It's no surprise that Taipei 101 is listed as a Wonder of the World.

The skyscraper has two circular observation platforms - external and internal. There are information displays in the indoor area, exhibitions are held there, and souvenirs can be purchased. The external site is located at an altitude of 392 meters. Visitors can use audio guides to explore local landmarks and learn about the city's history.

Every year on New Year's Eve, fireworks are launched here - in 2005 they lasted only 30 seconds, in 2011 the duration increased to five minutes.

Now the Empire State Building has lost the palm - with a height of 443 meters, it occupies only 22nd place in the ranking of the tallest buildings in the world, but this does not bother tourists. Over the entire history of its existence, the skyscraper has been visited by 110 million people.

In addition to the traditional observation deck at an altitude of 373 meters, which offers stunning views of Manhattan, the Empire State Building has a circular observation deck with a 360-degree view. It is located 17 floors below, but is even more popular.

A couple of years ago, the Internet wrote about two projects of kilometer-long skyscrapers - the Nakheel tower in Dubai and the Mubarak al Kabir tower in Kuwait. However, the Dubai project was canceled due to the crisis of the Nakheel group, and the Kuwait project was stuck at the stage of approvals with the government.

However, a kilometer-high building will be erected on our planet in the near future. Back in 2011, it became known that Kingdom Holding, owned by Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, signed a contract for the construction of the Kingdom Tower skyscraper in Saudi Arabia, the height of which will exceed 1000 meters.

The tallest skyscraper in the world - Kingdom Tower will rise more than 1 km. over the city of Jeddah, off the coast of the Red Sea. The tower will include hotels, residential apartments, offices and the world's highest observation deck. Adrian Smith was appointed as the chief architect of the project; he also designed the Burj Khalifa, as well as a number of other skyscrapers in the USA, China and the UAE (see his website). Amount Prisoner Kingdom Holding The contract is valued at $1.2 billion. Kingdom Tower will be the central and first stage of construction of the area Kingdom City, in the construction of which the Saudi prince is ready to invest a total of $20 billion.

Upon completion of construction, which will take 5 years, Kingdom Tower will surpass the Burj Khalifa, the current record holder, by at least 173 meters. Unique design feature Kingdom Tower There will be a sky terrace with a diameter of 30 meters, located at the 157th floor. In total, the tallest skyscraper in the world will have more than 200 floors. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2012.

It is known that the main problem of such grandiose projects is their payback. At a press conference in Riyadh Prince Alwaleed assured that “this project will provide sustainable profits Kingdom Holding and its shareholders. We have been in discussions for four years to make it economically viable... This project is very feasible, and everyone is happy with its potential profitability.”

From the top of the tower, an area within a radius of about 140 km will be visible. It is assumed that the satellite city will consist mainly of luxury housing, hotels and business centers.

The architectural highlight will be a saucer balcony:

Regardless of which country this building is erected, the construction of an anthropogenic structure, more than 1 kilometer in height, is an important achievement, indicating considerable technical progress of all mankind.

Data project as well will be carried out by a joint organization from the companies EC Harris and Mace. The Guardian newspaper reports that it was this team that was involved in the construction of the tallest building in Western Europe - The Shard. This is the Shard Tower in London.

Directly ourselves construction will be handled by the Bin Laden Group, which is owned by the Osama bin Laden family. Invest construction of Kingdom Tower there will be a company called Jeddah Economic, which is controlled by Al Waleed bin Talal (Prince of Saudi Arabia). According to plan construction of the Kingdom Tower skyscraper should begin in the middle of this year and end in five years.

The project developer is the British company Hyder Consulting, and the architectural design will be carried out by Omrania & Associates from Saudi Arabia.

In April 2011, several news outlets reported that the construction plan had been accepted and the total cost of the construction would be about $30 billion.

The total cost of the project, including the satellite city, is expected to be US$20 billion (for comparison, the cost of constructing the tallest skyscraper at the moment, the Burj Khalifa, is US$1.5 billion), but the initial target was no more than US$10 billion.

Project Kingdom Tower not the only architectural development that claims to be the tallest building. It is also known that within the framework of another project called “Caspian Islands” in the Republic of Azerbaijan they are going to build a 186-story skyscraper with a height of 1050 meters. In addition, Kuwait has a high-rise tower project called "City of Silk", which is 1001 meters high. The People's Republic of China has developed a project for the Sky City high-rise building, the height of which is 838 meters.

In the 20th century, a lot of new things appeared: man flew into space, cellular communications, computers, robots and skyscrapers. Indeed, in large cities, when the population began to exceed the possible accommodation resource, houses began to grow not in width, but in height. But it is not always possible to easily answer the question of what the tallest tower in the world is called and what its height is, because many companies, in pursuit of the right to own the tallest skyscraper in the world, carry out construction work all year round.

Let's take a look at the 10 most famous tall skyscrapers in the world at the moment.

Burj Khalifa

This skyscraper, built in Dubai, is the largest in the world and one of. Its height with spire is 829.8 m and 163 floors. Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004 and ended in 2010. This tall stalagmite-shaped building is one of the attractions of Dubai, as many come there to ride the fastest elevator or visit the world's highest restaurant or nightclub.

Abraj al-Bait

The skyscraper, also known as the Makkah Clock Royal Tower Hotel, was opened in 2012 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Its height is 601m or 120 floors.

Abraj al-Bait is the tallest tower with the largest clock in the whole world. This building consists of shopping centers, a hotel, residential apartments, a garage and two heliports.

Taipei 101

The 509m high skyscraper was built in 2004 on the island of Taiwan in Taipei. According to the architects who built Taipei, this building, despite the fact that it consists of 101 floors above and 5 floors below ground, is one of the most stable skyscrapers in the world.

Shanghai World Financial Center

This graceful skyscraper, 492 m high, was built in 2008 in the center of Shanghai. A special feature of its structure is the trapezoidal hole at the end of the building, which serves to reduce wind pressure.

International Commerce Center ICC Tower

This is a 118-storey skyscraper with a height of 484 m, built in 2010 in the western part of Hong Kong. According to the project, it was supposed to be higher (574 m), but the government imposed a ban on exceeding the height of the mountains surrounding the city.

Petronas Twin Towers

Until 2004, this skyscraper was considered the tallest in the world (until the advent of Taipei 101). The 451.9 m tall towers, consisting of 88 ground floors and 5 basement floors, are located in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. At the height of the 41st and 42nd floors, the towers are connected by the tallest double-decker bridge in the world - the Skybridge.

Zifeng Tower

In the Chinese city of Nanjing, an 89-story building with a height of 450 m was built in 2010. Thanks to its unusual architecture, this skyscraper looks different from different viewing points.

Willis Tower

The 110-story building with a height of 442 m (without antenna), located in, held the title of the tallest skyscraper in the world for 25 years, until 1998. But it still remains the tallest building in the United States. For tourists, there is an absolutely transparent observation deck on the 103rd floor.

Kingkey 100

This is the fourth skyscraper in China, its height is 441.8 m. Its hundred floors house a shopping center, offices, a hotel, restaurants and a sky garden.

On one half of them there are offices, and on the second - a hotel. This is the western part of the Guangzhou Twin Towers project, but the East Tower is still under construction.

As you can see, the listed skyscrapers are mostly located in the east, where the shortage of land resources is greater than in Europe and the west.
