Story

Voronezh State University was created in 1918 on the basis of the Imperial Yuryev University, which was evacuated from Yuryev (now Tartu): in 1918, due to the threat of German intervention, some teachers and students were evacuated to Voronezh. Dorpat (later Yuryev) University in the city of Dorpat was founded in 1802 by decree of Alexander I (the founder was the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf, who founded it back in 1632). This educational institution was the second operating university in Russia after Moscow. Among the professors of Yuryev University who were evacuated to Voronezh were:

The first rector of the university was the scientist-historian V. E. Regel, who took over the affairs of the last rector of Yuryev University in Voronezh, the head of its liquidation commission, mathematician V. G. Alekseev, V. E. Regel, who held this position until 1925. Training sessions began on November 12, 1918. At that time, the university included 4 faculties - medical, physics and mathematics, historical and philological and legal

At the beginning of 1919, 10 thousand students were studying at the university. Anyone could study; only 4 years later, in 1923, entrance exams were introduced.

In 1920, after the conclusion of the Tartu Peace Treaty between the RSFSR and Estonia (according to paragraph 4 of Article XII of the treaty), the property evacuated to Russia (libraries, archives, teaching aids, documents and other items) was returned to the University of Tartu. However, most of the teachers who left for Voronezh in connection with the offensive of the army of Kaiser Germany and the occupation of Estonia did not return to Estonia.

In 1968, the university was named after the Lenin Komsomol by the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR.

Since 2007, VSU has been participating in the Oxford Russian Foundation scholarship program. About 130 students of the university's humanities departments annually receive scholarships from the foundation.

At the end of 2014, the university was included in the ranking of the 100 best universities of the BRICS member countries.
