Victory Day is a holiday that will always be a special date for each of us. Let every year the passage of impartial time leave fewer and fewer eyewitnesses of the events that served as the basis for it. Let every year the horrors of the Great Patriotic War and the “joy with tears in our eyes” from the official surrender of the most fierce enemy of every Soviet person move further and further into the past. Victory Day on May 9 still remains the most significant, largest holiday.

Almost every family living in the post-Soviet space has its own stories of bitter losses and joyful victories associated with the war years. It is not surprising that many families have their own traditions of celebrating May 9th. But it is large-scale citywide programs that make it possible to fully feel that despite all our differences, despite the fact that the views and values of a modern resident of Russia differ in many ways from the ideals that our compatriots lived by in the 40-50s of the last century, intransigence to fascism, rejection of its ideas about racial inequality, pride in our fathers and grandfathers who managed to cure the world of this deadly plague - that is the unshakable, eternal thing that is in each of us.

All-Russian action “Immortal Regiment”

Immortal Regiment 2015

“Immortal Regiment” is an all-Russian action, during which a column of those whose relatives fought at the front, worked in the rear, or were prisoners of concentration camps, passes through the streets of cities. Anyone can print out a photograph of a front-line relative and join the memorial march. All processions are held with the support of Immortal Regiment volunteers.

Participation in the procession of the immortal regiment is an opportunity to pay tribute to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, it is a reminder to current and future generations that simple, ordinary people gave their lives so that the sky above our homes would be peaceful.

This event was first organized in Tomsk in 2012. In 2015, about 500 cities around the world and more than half a million people took part in it. This year, the Immortal Regiment is expanding, accepting people from Norway, Israel and the USA into its ranks.

You can register a veteran on the website, and make a photograph yourself, or order the production of a special banner. If there is no photograph, you can put the full name and title of the hero on the banner.

The Battle of Moscow: The First Step to Victory

Moscow, being the capital of the USSR during the Great Patriotic War, was the most important strategic object and, of course, a tasty morsel for the fascist army. Adolf Hitler wanted to get this city no less than the whole world. The German commanders-in-chief used carefully developed tactics to capture Moscow, which is why the operations to defend it were so difficult and took so long. In the battle of Moscow, we lost thousands of pieces of equipment and, most importantly, our soldiers. Nevertheless, this Victory became the first and largest step during the entire period of the war towards ending the war in favor of the USSR.

The Battle of Moscow took place in the fall of 1941 and the winter of 1941-1942. It is customary to divide it into three stages. The first - defensive - lasted from September 30 to December 5, 1941. Despite the numerical and force superiority of the German army, we managed to hold the defense of Moscow. Most likely, team spirit and patriotism helped the Russian soldiers, which the Germans clearly underestimated. Hitler planned to completely capture Moscow within two to three months, and this mistake cost him a lot. Frosts set in, but the capital of the USSR still could not be conquered. Taking advantage of the weakening of the German army, unprepared for Russian frosts, on December 6, the Soviet Union launched a counter-offensive against the Nazi troops.

The main achievement of the December operations was the destruction of the threat of the capture of Moscow. German troops were thrown back tens of kilometers from the capital. Gathering the last remnants of their will, the Russian soldiers continued to “drive” the Nazis further and further. Thus, we managed to completely return to our control the Moscow, Tula and Ryazan regions, as well as partially liberate certain areas of the Oryol, Kalinin and Smolensk regions from the invaders.

For desperate Soviet citizens, working tirelessly day and night at the country's military factories, every news from the capital was a real consolation, instilling hope and the will to win in their suffering hearts. That is why the Victory in the Battle of Moscow became such a valuable event of the Great Patriotic War - not only as an important strategic achievement, but also as a symbol of faith and love for the Motherland. It is for this feat that the capital was awarded the title of hero city, which is why hundreds of thousands of Russians annually flock to Moscow to celebrate May 9th. After all, not only the actions of people can be heroic - even the walls of houses and the streets of the capital then fought for our victory.

How Victory Day over Fascism is celebrated in other countries

Victory Day over Fascism is celebrated not only in our country, but also in a number of other world countries. Thus, in the United States of America, at the end of April, the traditional laying of wreaths takes place at the memorial called “Spirit of the Elbe” - a monument erected in honor of the military brotherhood of the Allied republics.

In Great Britain, on May 8, a solemn ceremony is being held at the iconic object - the obelisk, dedicated to the memory of all soldiers who have ever died during hostilities, in which members of the royal family take part. On this day, British military personnel, politicians, public figures and ordinary citizens who are not indifferent to the feat of Soviet soldiers gather here. And the next day, the cruiser Belfast, which today operates as a museum, becomes the site of official events. A magnificent meeting of veterans and their honoring takes place here. All those who come bring flowers to the monument to Soviet citizens who died during the Second World War at the Imperial War Museum in London.

France is a country in whose calendar Victory Day over Fascism is an official public holiday. It is celebrated on May 8th during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris. Along with this, parades, ceremonial marches and entertainment events take place in the capital and other cities.

In the capital of Germany, Berlin, in the presence of numerous delegations from Russia, America, England and France, mass events and memorial ceremonies are being held on May 8.

In some Eastern European countries, such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, May 8 is an official public holiday and a day off. This date is celebrated with large-scale displays of military equipment, collective marches and historical reenactments. People gather together to honor the memory of fallen fellow citizens who fought against fascism. Politicians and representatives of public organizations arrive at memorials and monuments to place wreaths and bow in a moment of silence.

In Serbia, Victory Day is one of the main annual holidays. A military parade takes place in the capital of the state, Belgrade, and then, in the presence of the president of the country, a solemn ceremony takes place on Mount Avala, where the Monument to the Unknown Soldier is erected.
