Properties of artificial facing stone

Artificial stone is more profitable than its natural counterpart. It is stronger, cheaper and comes in a variety of colors.

Types of artificial stones

They can be used to design an interior of any stylistic direction. It has specific advantages over natural stone:

  • It is environmentally friendly and hygienic, as it does not have scratches or microcracks on the surface, which contribute to the proliferation of harmful bacteria.
  • Artificial stone is much lighter.
  • Has high sound insulation.
  • It is unpretentious: easy to install, easy to install.

Decorative facing stone does not lose its properties under the influence of temperature changes, excess moisture in the atmosphere, or chemicals. Classification of decorative stone

Depending on the production technology and the raw materials used, artificial stones come in several types. Some of them can only be produced in industrial enterprises. In artisanal conditions, decorative stone is produced from gypsum, cast acrylic and concrete (reinforced or molded) stone.

Artificial stone for external cladding, in particular reinforced concrete, is made from the following materials:

  • sand;
  • cement;
  • fillers;
  • colored mineral pigments;
  • hardening accelerators;
  • special plasticizers.

Concrete stone is used to make decorative cobblestones and boulders, which do not differ in appearance from natural ones, as well as for cladding the outside of buildings.

Artificial acrylic stone is made on the basis of acrylic resin with the addition of a composite material, hardener, and colored pigment. It is used for interior decoration in residential and public spaces. The disadvantage of this material is that it can be easily scratched.

But it is compensated by the ability to restore the glossy surface with simple polishing.

The composition of gypsum cast stone includes:

  • gypsum;
  • white cement;
  • pozzolanic additions;
  • oxide pigments.

Such additives make gypsum less brittle. It is used only for interior decoration, as it is not resistant to low temperatures.

Decorative gypsum tiles are environmentally friendly, practical to use, maintain natural humidity in the room, are also suitable for long-term use and are inexpensive.

Organization of the workroom

Before starting the production of decorative stone, you should properly plan the upcoming work and think through options for marketing the products.

The production of gypsum tiles at home and other facing stones in small quantities can be done in a small room - a personal garage or barn. If you want to organize an enterprise on a larger scale, you need to select a building of a larger size and taking into account certain requirements.

  • Renting premises. It is more profitable to rent a work space on the outskirts of the city - it is easier to find a spacious and inexpensive building here. In addition, you will not have to deliver products from the center to customers.
  • Water. The manufacture of artificial building material requires significant use of water. Therefore, you should rent a room near water wells or a water treatment plant. In such conditions, process water will be much cheaper when purchased, and its delivery to the place of stone production will cost minimally.
  • Heating. Heating is not required for the warehouse space. If the finished product warehouse is located outside, it is necessary to make a rain shelter over it. The temperature of the main room reserved for the production of decorative stone must be positive so that the water necessary for work does not freeze. In a place specially designated for drying the stone, you must constantly maintain 30 degrees of heat and dry air. Rooms for auxiliary workers are also heated. We must not forget about ventilation in the room.
  • Wiring. An important point is proper electrical wiring. When producing stone, a lot of electricity is consumed. Therefore, electrical wires must be in perfect condition and of the required size so that equipment breakdown or fire does not occur in this enterprise.

The production of stone in large quantities requires the recruitment of working personnel - at least two people: a technologist and an auxiliary worker.

Before starting a business, it should be registered with the relevant authorities.

Equipment and work tools

To make artificial stone at home, you need equipment and various tools, which are purchased depending on the scale of production. A small volume of decorative stone can be made using a vat, a drill-mixer, a trowel and self-made molds. For example, you can make your own plaster tiles.

Special equipment for the production of artificial stone on a large scale includes:

  • Vibrating table It is used to compact the material by removing air bubbles from it.
  • Vibrator - for moving the vibrating table.
  • Vibrating conveyor for moving bulk materials.
  • Concrete mixer and mortar mixer for mixing water and dry material until smooth.
  • Elastic silicone or stone molds. A varied assortment is obtained by using various forms in production.

  • work tables;
  • drill with a special attachment for mixing;
  • boxes for finished stone;
  • scales;
  • racks with pallets;
  • drying chambers;
  • forklift for transporting goods;

Technological process

The technology for producing artificial stone is divided into two types.

The first is vibrocompression. This method is characterized by low cost of goods and fully mechanized production. This technology is suitable for the production of a large number of products.

The second method is vibration casting. Its advantages are inexpensive equipment, high-quality surfaces, a large selection of products, and the rich color of artificial stone. Vibratory casting technology is appropriate for the production of medium quantities of products.

The technological process includes several sequential actions:

  • Creation of a master model. To get started, three pieces are enough.
  • Preparation of forms. There should be at least ten of them if you need to get different textures, since each of the forms is used only once a day.
  • Prepare a mixture of the required components by mixing them in a mortar mixer until smooth.
  • Pouring the resulting mixture into molds.
  • Compact the solution on a vibrating table for at least two minutes. Thus, air is expelled from the solution.
  • For several hours (8-10) at a temperature of 30 degrees, the solution in the molds is in the dryer until it hardens. Then it is transferred to a room with normal temperature and humidity for two days.
  • The molds with the frozen mixture are transferred to a special work table and the products are separated from them. Then high-quality finished products are selected, placed on pallets and sent to the warehouse.
  • At the end of the work, the molds are washed with acid to remove any remaining solution.

The production of gypsum tiles has some differences from the production of other types of artificial stone:

  • casting molds - small in size and weight;
  • a vibrating table is not used for production;
  • the process of painting the finished stone is quite simple and inexpensive;
  • ready-made gypsum mixture has a low price.

Producing decorative stone is quite simple and profitable. A competent approach to the enterprise and excellent product quality will make your income high and stable.

The technology and equipment have been around for over 50 years. Calibrated products made from cement-sand or gypsum mixtures of any surface texture are called artificial or decorative stone. It is used in all areas of construction: from the construction of fences, paving paths and to interior decorative finishing.

Advantages of artificial stone

The main advantage of artificial stone over natural stone is the low cost and uniformity of the products, which makes their installation easier. The latest technologies using airbrush equipment make it possible to apply a pattern to the surface of the stone that most accurately imitates the natural texture.

The simplicity of the technology for manufacturing artificial stone, the availability of materials and equipment for organizing the production process, plus the demand for products in the construction market are the main factors that allow a novice entrepreneur to start his own business with minimal risk.

The entrepreneur is not limited by the choice of sizes and textures of the stone produced. Each type of product has its own niche in the market. At the first stage, you need to understand the minimum required set of equipment and materials that are needed to start your own production.

Production room

For production, first of all, it is necessary to prepare a room in which the equipment will be placed and finished products will be stored. Ideally, it should consist of 3 separate parts:

  • main production premises;
  • warehouse for storing finished products;
  • warehouse for consumables.

The work shop in which the production equipment is located must have an area of ​​at least 50 m2 and be heated.

Space is necessary for comfortable movement of workers and convenient placement of equipment. To prevent the solution from freezing in winter, the air temperature in the workshop should not be below 00C. The optimal range is 15–250C.

The production premises are supplied with water supply and electrical communications with a voltage of 220–380 V for connecting equipment.

Warehouses must be connected to the production workshop. The heated finished product warehouse is equipped with forced ventilation. The air temperature in it is maintained at 15–250 C. The warehouse area is calculated depending on the planned volume of products.

Production methods

There are several ways to produce decorative stone. The simplest and most accessible is vibration casting. Vibrocompression is mainly used for the production of cinder blocks. To organize full-fledged production, you will need to purchase expensive equipment. There are manual vibratory pressing plants, but they are used to produce stone for their own needs in small volumes.

Production by vibrocompression is cheaper in terms of the cost of consumables and energy costs.

In addition to the equipment for stone production, these technologies differ:

  • product properties;
  • surface texture;
  • the ability to manufacture elements of complex shapes.

Stone made by vibration pressing has a specific “raw” surface, and the shapes are limited to a monolithic small size.

Vibration casting has great decorative possibilities and gives a smooth front surface of the stone. This method is used to produce decorative quality elements, fence sections, and countertops.

Equipment for production of vibration casting

For the production of artificial stone by vibration casting, high-tech and expensive equipment is not used. Many craftsmen make the main working units with their own hands:

  • vibrating table;
  • concrete mixer or mortar mixer;
  • vibrating sieve;
  • precision weighing equipment for dosing pigments and plasticizers;
  • work tables or workbenches;
  • plastic containers for dispensing water and bulk materials;
  • plastic molds for casting stone;
  • wooden pallets for stacking filled forms;
  • hand tools (ladles, trowels, spatulas, trowels, wheelbarrows).








The vibrating table is used to remove air bubbles from the solution in injection molds and compact it. If the form has a small pattern, the vibrating table ensures full penetration of the solution into all its parts.

Vibrating tables are often made independently. Depending on the location of the motor with the eccentric and their number, vibrating tables come in 2 types: with vertical and horizontal vibration.

A vibrating sieve is used to separate large fragments from bulk materials. To produce high-quality stone, the raw materials must be homogeneous. If the stone is polished, flaws will appear in areas of large fragments. The equipment is equipped with different types of meshes, which differ in cell calibration.

A construction mixer (mortar mixer or concrete mixer) is a device for producing decorative stone, which can be purchased or rented. The quality of the solution depends on the thoroughness and uniformity of mixing the ingredients.

Do-it-yourself mold making

They are purchasing because a continuous production cycle will require 50 or more dies of the same type. But for exclusive elements you can make them yourself:

  • a master model is created from plaster;
  • then a box is made from sheet metal or wood according to the dimensions of the model;
  • the model is fixed in a box and filled with Por-A-Molda polyurethane compound;
  • After a day, the frozen form with the imprint of the master model hardens. It is removed and used to cast stone.

Over time, the surface of the molds wears out, and the sets are updated by purchasing or making new ones.

Necessary raw materials for production

Artificial stone is made from a cement-sand mixture with the addition of fine crushed stone (for paving slabs) or from gypsum polymer mixtures.

For production you will need the following materials:

  • cement;
  • crushed stone;
  • sand;
  • gypsum polymer;
  • chemical compositions (plasticizer, coloring pigments, oil for molds and acid for cleaning them);
  • fiberglass;
  • reinforcing metal mesh.








Gray or white cement is used, depending on the color options of the stone. Gray cement is used for coloring in the mass, and white cement is used for surface drawing.

Gypsum polymer is a mixture of gypsum and polymer, which reduces fragility, increases water resistance, and increases bending strength.

Monochrome products are obtained by dyeing in the mass. By applying paint with a compressor, brushes or airbrush equipment to the front surface of the finished element, a natural pattern that imitates natural materials is achieved. This technique requires a lot of experience.

Working staff

To establish a continuous process, which includes formulation development, production of artificial stone, packaging and management, the entrepreneur needs to think about the staff.

What to do first

The technologist, in addition to developing technical specifications, is engaged in the manufacture of new models and forms, selects equipment and controls the quality of products.

Continuous work process is ensured by two or three teams of 4 people. in each.

Packers ensure the formation of finished pallets in the warehouse and their proper storage, and managers ensure the sale of products.

A new entrepreneur usually performs the function of production manager himself, supervising the work of all employees and purchasing raw materials.

Production technology

The technology for producing artificial stone by vibration casting includes the following stages:

  • preparation of the mixture;
  • dye additive;
  • pouring the mixture into half the mold;
  • shaking on a vibrating table;
  • reinforcement process;
  • pouring the second layer of the mixture;
  • repeated shaking on a vibrating table;
  • transferring forms to drying.

The sand is sifted on a vibrating sieve. The solution is prepared from one part cement, three parts sand and one part water. First, water is poured into the concrete mixing equipment, then dry ingredients, pigments and plasticizer are added. The finished mixture should have the thickness of sour cream.

When producing colored artificial stone, to reduce the cost of production, the molding mixture is mixed in two concrete mixers. In one, a colored solution is prepared, in the other - a regular one. When filling out the form, the first layer is the tinted compound, and the second layer is the regular one.

After pouring the first layer, a reinforcing mesh is placed into the mold. Fiber fiber is added to the mixture during the mixing process.

For better adhesion of the stone to the mortar and the surface to be finished, stripes are applied to the freshly poured concrete mortar with a comb spatula.

The solution hardens within 12 hours. The molds are stacked on pallets through spacers. After drying, the resulting artificial stone is removed from the molds and laid out in the warehouse until the concrete finally acquires strength.

After removing the stone, the molds are washed to remove any remaining solution. Dried deposits are removed with hydrochloric acid. Before reusing molds for making artificial stone, their surface is lubricated with special oil.

Equipment for the production of countertops

The manufacture of countertops is a high-tech industry. To organize it, you will need more expensive equipment, which is ready-made lines. If you have an idea to master this process yourself, then in addition to the specified equipment for vibration casting you need to purchase:

  • milling cutter;
  • grinding machine;
  • jigsaw



When making countertops yourself, special attention is paid to the reinforcement of the poured material, high-quality milling and grinding. To obtain a smooth surface, bulk materials are added to the solution, passed through the finest mesh of a vibrating sieve.

The use of artificial stone for finishing facade walls allows you to create original design solutions at low cost. Due to its high performance characteristics, the material is widely used among many developers; it is used both for finishing expensive exclusive facades and budget houses. Moreover, the cost of finishing is almost the same.

You can make artificial stone from gypsum and cement with your own hands. Each material has its own strengths and weaknesses.


The stone can be painted to improve its appearance. This is done in two ways.

The dye is added to the entire composition at once. Powder dyes that are resistant to sunlight are used. The method is most often used when producing large quantities of material or at the request of designers. Advantages of this method:

  • uniform color of the entire volume of the stone;
  • mechanical damage is invisible;
  • uniform color of all stones;
  • The manufacturing process is accelerated.

Surfaces are painted after removal from the mold. Types of paints that are resistant to solar radiation are used; painting is done with brushes, sponges or pneumatic sprayers. Advantages of separate painting:

  • the ability to give each stone an original appearance;
  • reduction in production costs;
  • the ability, if desired, to change the appearance of the façade walls after installation.

A variation of this method is powder coating the internal surfaces of the molds. A small amount of different shades is applied with a brush to the inner surface of the mold; the places of painting do not matter, it all depends on the “artistic” abilities of the manufacturers.

It is advisable to buy ready-made molds in specialized stores, but if for some reason you cannot purchase a ready-made silicone mold, then you can make it yourself.

For manufacturing, you need to prepare even slats with smooth surfaces; for example, we took sections of sandwich panels, they are even, smooth, not afraid of moisture, and silicone does not stick to them. You will need quite a lot of two-component silicone with a hardener. The quantity depends on the size of the molds; you can buy it in online stores or large construction supermarkets. Sold in containers larger than one liter. Forms can be made to match commercially available facing materials or you can choose the topography of the front surface yourself. We will indicate all other accessories and tools along the step-by-step instructions. The technology for using ready-made stones or self-made templates is not much different; we will focus on the second option. It allows you to create any reliefs on the surface.

Step 1. Cut out stone patterns from the planks. The thickness is 8–10 mm, the length and width are at your discretion. Standard dimensions are 20x5 cm. But this is not necessary, it all depends on what kind of stele you plan to decorate the walls with and where exactly to place the artificial stone. There is no need to make it thicker; it is strong enough, and due to its small thickness, material is saved and weight is reduced.

Step 2. Glue corresponding pieces of embossed wallpaper or other elements onto the surface of the templates to create a hill. If it’s difficult for you to come up with something on your own, then buy several ready-made artificial stones in the store and fill the mold using them.

Step 3. Use self-tapping screws to strengthen the walls of the box for filling the mold; if there are gaps, cover them with liquid glue or seal them with single-sided tape. The dimensions of the box are arbitrary and selected taking into account the workpieces.

The distance between individual workpieces is 5 mm. Before installation, check the gaps, they should all be exactly the same. We do not recommend making a mold for halves. Firstly, their required quantity is difficult to predict, and it is not recommended to use extra halves instead of whole ones. Secondly, it is much easier to cut a piece of the required length with a grinder during installation.

Step 4. Draw a horizontal line along the inner perimeter of the walls; it should be approximately 1–1.5 cm above the surface of the templates. This parameter is optimal for saving polyurethane and is sufficient to maintain shape stability.

Step 5. Carefully coat all surfaces that will come into contact with polyurethane with an intermediate layer.

You can take petroleum jelly or grease, buy special liquids in stores, etc. We recommend dissolving laundry soap in water and spraying the surfaces with a spray bottle. Simple, cheap, fast and reliable. The same solution can also be used during the manufacture of artificial stones. Soap has another undeniable advantage - it does not leave marks on facial surfaces and, if necessary, can be easily washed off with ordinary water.

Step 6. Prepare polyurethane according to the instructions.

Mix the ingredients very thoroughly; it is better to use an electric mixer. It is difficult to ensure uniform mixing manually, and the quality of the polyurethane largely depends on this. It is better to do the filling in two stages; prepare the material in this way.

Step 7 Align the box strictly horizontally, use a level for this.

Step 8 Slowly and very carefully pour the polyurethane into the box.

Keep track of how much material is needed, this will give you the opportunity to navigate the size of the second portion. When filling, pay special attention to the space between individual templates, do not allow gaps. After the first stage of pouring polyurethane is completed, lightly tap the edges of the box with a rubber mallet or other non-metallic object to remove air.

Step 9 Prepare the second part of polyurethane and pour it into the box. Pay attention to the horizontal line along the perimeter of the walls. If there is a little polymer left, pour it all out, you will still have to throw it away, and the thickened bottom will not harm during the actual production of stones.

Polyurethane should cure in approximately 4-8 hours, but the exact time depends on the brand.

Practical advice. To prepare large quantities of polyurethane, you need to use accurate electronic scales. The proportions of the components must be controlled down to the gram; the physical characteristics of the finished form depend on this.

If possible, make several forms in the same way. After each excavation has hardened, all surfaces should be covered with an intermediate layer. The forms are ready, you can start making artificial stone.

How to remove the mold

After the polyurethane has hardened, disassemble the walls of the box and begin removing the mold.

If you carefully followed our recommendations, there will be no problems. The form is removed with great effort - try cutting off the polyurethane a little in the gluing areas with a sharp mounting knife. If you find shells and mechanical damage to the front surfaces, do not be discouraged. Problems can be easily fixed with silicone; buy one tube and repair any holes or damage.

Algorithm for manufacturing artificial stone

We have already mentioned that gypsum stones are recommended for interior work. It is better to finish facades with cement-based materials. To make the mixture, use only clean sifted sand, increase the amount of cement by about 30% compared to ordinary masonry mortar. As for consistency, the decision should be made individually. If you have a vibrator, you can make the solution thicker. It is easier to work with a vibrator, and the stone grasps faster. But preparing a special vibrating table for producing stone in small quantities is not economically feasible. In such cases, the solution must be made thinner; the consistency should resemble rich sour cream. You will have to remove air from the stones manually, but the quality will not suffer from this. Of course, if all the work is done responsibly and not in a hurry.

Practice shows that to ensure uninterrupted production of artificial stone from a cement-sand mixture, it is necessary to have molds for approximately one square meter of product.

Step 1. Before pouring, lubricate the inner surfaces of the mold with soapy water. Prepare a solution at the rate of 1:10. The concentration of soap can be increased, but cannot be decreased. To do the job, use an ordinary household spray bottle.

Step 2. Prepare the solution, determine the amount yourself.

Practical advice. To increase the strength of artificial stone, it is recommended to add polypropylene fiber to the solution; one or two small pinches per bucket of solution is enough. Fiber not only increases the strength of the stone, but also minimizes the risk of the formation of air pockets, makes the solution more plastic, and makes it easier to work with such material. It costs a penny and does not have any noticeable effect on the final price of the product.

As we said above, the consistency of the mixture depends on the presence of an electric vibrator.

Step 3. Pour the thoroughly mixed mass into molds. There is a vibrator - turn it on. No device - tap lightly with a hammer from the bottom of the workbench. Do not forget to level the position of the molds horizontally before pouring the solution. We recommend making a special table for pouring and installing it in the desired position.

Practical advice. Don't get carried away by vibration. If the mass is liquid, then during this operation the sand falls down, and this is an extremely undesirable phenomenon.

Step 4. Place the poured forms on prepared racks to allow the solution to mature. The number and size of racks depend on the “capacity” of your production.

Step 5. After the mass has set, begin to release the molds.

Gradually move it to the edge of the tabletop, bend the polypropylene down and take out the artificial stone one by one. If the stone is long, then place the mold on the table in a vertical position, bend the edges and release the stone.

Complete drying can be done outdoors or in any utility room, it all depends on the time of year and weather conditions. Remember that stones made of this material cannot be dried in direct sunlight; concrete must have time to complete chemical processes in a favorable manner.

There are two ways: adding powder dyes to the composition or applying paint to the surface of finished stones. Use iron oxide paints to paint surfaces.

In terms of quality and price, they satisfy users. If you are making a small number of stones, then you can use multi-colored acrylic pigments; they are diluted in any primer. The paint adheres well to the surface and has good performance characteristics. It is better to paint with a pneumatic spray gun; if you don’t have one, use a brush. Follow three rules:

  • the base should be the lightest of all the colors used;
  • make the seams the darkest;
  • When dyeing, use no more than three colors or shades thereof.

First paint the base of the stones, then the seams, the surface decoration is done last. That's all, the material is ready, you can start laying it on the surface of the facade walls. Always remember one rule: without theory there is no practice, and without practice there is never a quality product.

Practical advice. While the paint is not completely dry, wipe the surface of the stones with a slightly damp hoe. Due to this, the front side will take on a more natural appearance, minor mechanical damage will become less noticeable.

Installing artificial stone on walls

To complete the work, you will need a level, a mixer, a grinder with a diamond blade, a rubber mallet, a metal brush, a spatula, a trowel, a tape measure, a container for glue and primer, a syringe for grouting joints, wedges for maintaining the same width of the joints and a tool for jointing them. Consumables you need to buy are glue, primer and grout. The stone is fixed to the plastered facade walls.

Step 1. Clean the surfaces and level them if necessary. There is no need to level it too much; unevenness of a few millimeters will be eliminated using glue directly during laying of the artificial stone.

Step 2. Prime surfaces thoroughly. You should not skip this operation; a correctly selected primer significantly increases the adhesion of the adhesive to the plaster. And for heavy artificial stone made of cement-sand mortar, this is very important.

Step 3. Place the stones on a flat surface in the order in which you plan to fix them. During laying, do not allow sharp transitions in color; select stones taking into account the color and shades. Take the dimensions and transfer them to the wall surface.

Step 4. Mark the location of the stone on the wall. Use a level and carefully check that the lines are horizontal.

Step 5. Check for the presence of cement laitance on the back of the stones; if it is found, remove it with a wire brush. Cement laitance causes poor adhesion.

Step 6. Prepare the glue according to the manufacturer's instructions and mix it thoroughly with a mixer. After stirring, let it sit for 5 minutes and stir a little again.

Step 7 Start laying stone from the corners. Apply the glue with a comb spatula. If the surfaces have large unevenness, then increase the thickness of the glue and apply it with a spatula along the entire perimeter of the stone.

Practical advice. If the walls are being finished in very hot weather, then moisten the back side of the artificial stone with water. Use an ordinary wide brush.

Step 8 Mark the position of each row on the wall, use a rope with blue. The lines make it possible to control the stone laying process. Place planks under the bottom row or nail them to the wall. The first stones must lie on them, otherwise they will gradually fall down under their own weight. Try to apply glue to the entire surface of the stone. This is necessary to prevent the appearance of condensation in the voids or the ingress of atmospheric moisture. In winter, the water will freeze, which will cause individual stones to fall out.

Step 9 Check the position of the tile with a level and press it firmly into the mass.

Practical advice. It is very easy to check the quality of stone laying. Tap it with a wooden hammer or the handle of a screwdriver; a “drum” sound indicates the presence of voids. And this is marriage.

Step 10 Remove any mortar that appears in the seams using any available device. If it gets on the front surface, immediately remove it with a damp cloth.
