About the university

Mari State University is one of the young classical universities in the country, a major educational and scientific center of the Republic of Mari El and the Volga Federal District.
On May 4, 1971, the Minister of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the RSFSR V.N. Stoletov signed an order to organize a university in Yoshkar-Ola, designed to fill the acute shortage of personnel for the rapidly developing leading sectors of the national economy of the republic: industry, construction and agriculture.
Mari State University celebrated its 35th anniversary as a recognized center of education, science and culture. It has eight faculties, three institutes, more than 8,000 students, a highly professional team of professors, associate professors and researchers, numbering more than 700 teachers, including 75 doctors of science and almost 360 candidates of science.
Currently, the university trains personnel in nine areas: physical and mathematical sciences; natural Sciences; humanitarian sciences; education and pedagogy; Culture and art; economics and Management; agriculture and fisheries; energy, power engineering and electrical engineering; technology of food products and consumer goods. The university has established a multi-stage personnel training system based on the implementation of programs:
secondary general and vocational education - through multidisciplinary and polytechnic lyceums, a boarding school for gifted children, a linguistic school, specialized classes in schools of the republic and the college of MarSU;
higher professional education, carried out in two bachelor's degrees and 35 specialties;
postgraduate education – through postgraduate and doctoral studies;
additional education - through the Institute of Open Education and Information Systems, the regional center for advanced training and personnel training, the center for economic research, the Russian-American center, etc.
The university trains teachers in the field of innovative pedagogical, information and communication technologies, and implements the Presidential program for professional training of management personnel in a consortium with MESI.
The university has created a solid scientific potential. Scientific research is conducted in 14 areas of the humanities, science, mathematics and technology. Total research funding has doubled in recent years; more than half of the funds go to fundamental research; Research is underway under grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Russian Humanitarian Foundation, local grants and economic agreements. Research work is carried out on more than 60 topics on the basis of departments, 13 laboratories and 9 research centers. In recent years, an average of 22 monographs, 17 collections of scientific papers, 64 textbooks and teaching aids have been published annually. University scientists became laureates of international, all-Russian and republican competitions for the best scientific and educational book. Among the scientific community, the yearbooks “Mari Archaeographic Bulletin” and “Mari Legal Bulletin”, published by the historical, philological and law faculties, enjoy authority.
Training of scientific personnel is carried out in 38 specialties in postgraduate studies and 7 in doctoral studies; There are two doctoral dissertation councils. MarSU is a co-founder of three united specialized councils. About 15 scientific conferences are held annually, including international and all-Russian ones.
Every year, the role of the university in the formation of policies aimed at the accelerated development of higher education in the republic, the Volga Federal District, and the country is strengthening. MarSU is one of the main organizers of the work of the Council of Rectors of Universities of the Republic of Mari El, a member of the Volga and Eurasian University Associations. In the fall of 2005, MarSU was included in the Association of Classical Universities of Russia, the criteria for admission to which significantly exceed those established during the certification of the university. This is a great success for the university staff and high recognition of its merits.
The university is a recognized center of Finno-Ugric studies, forming a tolerant attitude between peoples, countries and states. Occupying a leading position in global Finno-Ugric studies, the university has established particularly close contacts with foreign Finno-Ugric scientific and educational centers in Finland, Estonia, Hungary, and with the M. Castren Society (Finland).
The established status of MarSU in the Finno-Ugric world has strengthened contacts with the Russian Finno-Ugric regions, with the Mari living compactly in Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Udmurtia, Kirov, Sverdlovsk and Nizhny Novgorod regions. The X International Congress of Finno-Ugric Studies and the XXII International Finno-Ugric Student Conference were held at the university in 2005.
The creation and establishment of the Mari State University marked a new stage in the multiplication of the intellectual potential of the republic, put it on par with the recognized centers of economic, social, cultural development of Russia and, perhaps most importantly, increased the national self-awareness of the people.

Who to be? This is the most important question that worries high school students. Fortunately, modern universities offer a huge selection of specialties, so every applicant can choose what he likes. However, everyone wants to choose a university or institute that will provide quality education.

In the city of Yoshkar-Ola there are two budget universities, which have been training first-class specialists in all fields and areas of activity for many decades. This is the Mari and Volga State Technological University.
