Geography is required for admission to specialties in the following areas: geography, geology, cartography, hydrometeorology and ecology.

Unified State Examination
The minimum passing score in geography in 2019 is 37; to overcome the threshold, it is enough to correctly solve the first 12 tasks. Convert the initial scores into test scores and evaluate your level of knowledge of the subject using the usual five-point system.
Structure of the Unified State Exam test
In 2019, the Unified State Exam test in geography consists of two parts, including 34 tasks.
- Part 1: 27 tasks (1–27) with a short answer, which is a number, word (phrase) or sequence of numbers.
- Part 2: 7 tasks (28–34) with a detailed answer, which is a drawing, solution to a problem or a detailed description of the entire progress of the task.

Structure of Part 1 of the Unified State Exam in Geography
In Part 1 there are different types of tasks:
- Correct sequence tasks.
- Multiple choice tasks. It is necessary to clearly establish the correspondence of the two columns.
- In the first part there are tasks where the answers are numbers. Here you need to pay attention to the correct placement of the sign before and after the number.
- Added tasks in which you need to insert words into the text.
- The final questions in the Unified State Exam in Geography are tasks to identify countries and regions of Russia based on a brief description.
Maps in Part 1 of the Unified State Exam in Geography
Each version of the CMM exam for grade 11 includes 2 cards:
- A world map showing the names of states.
- Map of Russia with the designation of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
These cards are needed to complete tasks such as task No. 1, where, using the available coordinates of a populated area, you need to determine its position on the territory of a particular country or subject of the Russian Federation.
In task No. 6, where you need to arrange the parallels in order of increasing length of the day, you can also use a map.
Task No. 8 requires countries to be ranked in order of increasing fertility rates. To do this, you need to have an idea of the demographic situation in different regions of the world. Using a map, you can determine in which region a particular country is located.
Task No. 9. You need to select countries of the world and regions of Russia with the highest or lowest population density.
Cards play a special role when performing tasks 24 and 25, where it is necessary to determine the country or region of Russia from a brief description. Using a map, a graduate can specify information about their geographic location.
When calculating distances and azimuths, you can use a ruler and a protractor.
Assignments using statistical data
KIMs on geography contain tasks using statistical information. These are the following tasks:
- 16 – the ability to determine and compare geographical trends in the development of socio-economic objects using statistical sources of information is tested;
- 21 – aimed at testing the ability to analyze statistical information presented in a diagram or table (a non-programmable calculator can be used);
- 31 – it is necessary to compare geographical trends in the development of socio-economic objects, processes and phenomena based on statistical indicators;
- 33 and 34 are linked to the same statistical source given in the table.
Filling out the answer forms
The graduate is given 2 answer forms:
- Form for recording short answers.
- Form for recording detailed answers.
When entering answers into the form, you must ensure that the answer is placed in the field that corresponds to the task number.
- Solve problems in draft form.
- Write your answer in the draft as required by the assignment.
- Do not enter the results directly into the answer sheets.

Answers must be given without a space, hyphen, or comma (except for decimal fractions).
Important!
- Each character must be written in a separate cell.

During the main period of the Unified State Examination in Geography (May 29, 2017), 13,095 graduates took part, which amounted to a little about 2% of all graduates of general education organizations in Russia.
Such a small number of exam participants is explained primarily by the small number of universities that require Unified State Examination results in geography.
The exam made it possible to objectively assess the quality of graduates’ training and differentiate them by level of preparation for competitive selection into institutions of secondary and higher vocational education.

The share of USE 2017 participants with test scores in the ranges of 41–60 and 61–80 increased by 6.6% compared to the same indicators in 2015, and the share of participants with low test scores in the range of 0–40 decreased by approximately 1 ,1%. At the same time, the share of high-scorers (81–100 thousand) decreased by approximately 1.6%.
The number of 100-point earners also decreased (from 90 to 18 people). Minor changes in the exam paper did not affect the level of its difficulty and the results of the exam participants, but did affect the average percentage of completion of individual tasks. Thus, the average percentage of completion of tasks 3, 11, 14 and 15 increased by an average of 15, the maximum score for their completion was increased to 2 points, and the average percentage of completion of tasks 9, 12, 13, 19 decreased by 15.
The share of graduates who did not score the minimum number of points was 9.13%, i.e. decreased by almost 4% compared to 2016, which can be explained by the targeted work of educational organizations with graduates from the “risk group” based on recommendations and teaching aids developed by FIPI specialists based on the results of exams of previous years.
The average test score increased by 1.2 to (55.15). Although such values indicate that, compared to 2016, in general, the 2017 Unified State Examination results in geography are slightly higher, they do not indicate a trend towards an increase in the level of geographical education, since the average score increased due to more successful completion of relatively simple standard tests. tasks, and the level of completion of non-standard tasks requiring creative application of knowledge was somewhat lower.
In 2017, graduates with an unsatisfactory level of preparation made up 9.3% of the total number of participants in the Unified State Examination in Geography. These graduates did not demonstrate the achievement of any of the requirements of the FC GOS, tested on the Unified State Exam in geography. This does not mean that none of the graduates of this group has any geographical knowledge, but their knowledge is fragmentary, does not have a system, and is based on everyday ideas.

Structure of test material
Like other CMMs, control and measurement material on geography consists of two blocks. The first part, 27 tasks, requires a short answer, and the second, consisting of 7 questions of increased difficulty, requires detailed solutions. The examinee is given 180 minutes to complete the examination paper, consisting of 34 questions.
The tasks are quite varied. Solving them requires a good knowledge of the geography of foreign countries and Russia, the ability to work with graphs and tables, as well as the ability to carry out fairly complex mathematical calculations. To independently assess the structure of the tasks, anyone can refer to the demo version of the Unified State Examination in Geography 2017. In order to simplify problem solving, the test taker can use the following items during the exam:
- ruler;
- protractor;
- calculator.
In addition, KIM contains a political map of the world and an administrative-political map of the Russian Federation.
Evaluation criteria for the Unified State Exam 2017 in Geography
The maximum primary score remained the same – 47. The minimum threshold did not change either. It is equal to 11. Here is what the primary/test points look like in a five-point system:
- below 11 (37)– bad;
- 11 (37) – 22 (50) – “troika”;
- 23 (51) – 37 (66) – “four”;
- above 38 (67)- “five”.
For correct and fully disclosed answers, subjects can receive from 1 to 2 points:
- 1 point: 1, 4 – 6, 8 – 10, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19 – 27;
- 2 points: 3, 7, 11, 14, 15, 18, 19, 28 – 34.
