UralGUFK is not only the most athletic university in Chelyabinsk, but also an educational institution that is one of the three best sports universities in Russia.

This university in Chelyabinsk has come a long and long way of development. For the first time, a higher educational institution was founded in 1970, as a branch of the Omsk State Institute of Physical Culture, becoming an independent institute 5 years later.

The active development of the university did not end there; in 1995, the higher education institution was reorganized into the Academy. 10 years later - in 2005 - UralGUFK Chelyabinsk became the university it is today.

The basis of the students of the Ural State University of Physical Culture are future coaches, but in addition to sports specialties, non-sports specialties have also received great development in this Chelyabinsk university in recent years.

Graduates of UralGUFK Chelyabinsk are accomplished coaches in more than 40 sports and other professionals in their field with the status of bachelor, master or specialist. Among the graduates of the Ural State University of Physical Culture there are names that glorified not only the Ural State University of Physical Culture and the Chelyabinsk region, but also Russia - hockey player Dmitry Kalinin, judoist Vitaly Makarov, biathlete Svetlana Ishmuratova and many others.

Much attention at this University of Chelyabinsk is paid to research activities. At the same time, not only teachers of Ural State University of Physical Culture take part in it, but also the students themselves, who from the 1st year represent the educational institution and the educational institution’s reports at conferences, seminars and competitions.

About the university

About the university
Ural contribution to the development of Russian sports

In conditions of intensive development of physical culture and sports in Russia, graduates of the Ural State University of Physical Culture are becoming increasingly in demand.

Success Rate

First of all, Ural State University of Physical Culture graduates are coaches and teachers of a variety of educational institutions. Every year, the only sports university in the Urals graduates more than 2,000 bachelors, specialists and masters in 40 sports and areas of medical and health work.

The latest innovations concern the opening at the university of directions in physical rehabilitation, non-traditional methods of healing, and physical culture of the East. Also, thanks to the university, the sports industry has recently begun to be replenished with specialists in the fields of law, economics, management, psychology, public relations and organizing work with youth.

UralGUFK has become a powerful base for providing the industry with personnel in various fields. At the same time, one of the big advantages is that specialists began to come into the country’s sports industry not “from outside”, but who received higher professional education at a specialized university and, thanks to this, have the most complete understanding of its features.

Over the past years, the university has not only been among the top three sports universities in Russia, but also occupies a leading position among specialized higher education institutions in the country. The names of its graduates are well known, as many of them became outstanding athletes. Not a single competition of the largest scale - both in Soviet and Russian history - was complete without the participation of students of UralGUFK. Among them are hockey players Sergei Mylnikov and Sergei Makarov, speed skating leader Tatyana Sidorova, judoist Grigory Verichev, marathon runner Leonid Moseev, swimmer Albert Bakaev and many other outstanding athletes who owe their education to the Chelyabinsk “sports” university.

And among today’s world sports stars there are many university graduates: biathlete Svetlana Ishmuratova, judoist Vitaly Makarov, hockey players Dmitry Kalinin, Evgeniy Malkin and Georgiy Gelashvili, volleyball player Ekaterina Gamova, as well as girls from the Uralochka water polo team. It would take a very long time to list famous athletes whose names are associated not only with great victories in Russian sports, but also with the university.

One thing is clear - UralGUFK has not lost its position over the years and is increasing the traditions established back in 1970, when the university appeared in Chelyabinsk as a branch of the Omsk State Institute of Physical Culture. Five years later, the university not only became independent, but also declared itself as an educational institution with great potential for training specialists in the field of sports. Today, more than 250 university students are members of Russian national teams.

Of course, it will not be possible to train the first young man you come across to become an outstanding athlete. But those who were able to pass the “sieve”, successfully passing the exams upon admission to Ural State University of Physical Culture, have every chance of making themselves an enviable career in the sports industry. The secret of educating professional athletes lies not only in modern approaches to the educational process. As befits in sports, students at UralGUFK from the first year are set up to win - and above all, in their studies.

The university united several structural divisions: the Chelyabinsk College of Physical Culture, the Chelyabinsk Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Education and the Interindustry Regional Center for Advanced Training and Professional Retraining of Physical Education Personnel. A large scientific and educational complex, which is now the Ural State University of Physical Culture, provides the learning process from pre-university training to advanced training of certified specialists. Today, university graduates work in physical culture and sports organizations, educational institutions and other enterprises not only in the Ural Federal District, but also in the Kama region, Kazakhstan, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan and other regions of Russia and the CIS countries.

High importance tasks

Of course, students themselves also take part in the research activities of Ural State University of Physical Culture. As a rule, they represent the university at various conferences, competitions and olympiads at the city, regional and district levels. The university management supports students' motivation for research activities and, in general, for acquiring knowledge, creating for them the most favorable conditions for both study and leisure.

Thus, from the first days of study, they try to adapt freshmen to the university as quickly as possible and include them in active student life. In 2006, a new dormitory building with 535 places was opened for future sports specialists. To organize leisure time for young people at Ural State University of Physical Culture, there are a variety of creative groups, ranging from a traditional vocal ensemble to a sports dance studio.

But the main thing that students are encouraged to do at a “sports” university is, of course, study. As part of the gathering of excellent students from sports universities in Russia, a dozen of the best students of Ural State University of Physical Culture annually vacation in the resorts of Cyprus and Turkey. So the incentive to study and lead a healthy lifestyle at the Ural State University of Physical Culture is significant. And, given the specialization of the university, sports and recreational work is one of the highest priorities here. Since the sports industry is associated with health, the athlete, in the understanding of the average person, personifies not only the desire for self-improvement, but also a healthy lifestyle to achieve the highest results. Therefore, he should set an example for those who are just about to join the sport.

The successes of modern Russian athletes are now associated with raising the prestige of Russia at the global level, so high hopes are pinned on them not only by fans, but also by the state. And for this, the country creates the necessary conditions for athletes within the framework of an improving sports industry. It, in turn, must possess the latest scientific developments and be staffed by professionals. The Ural State University of Physical Culture makes a significant contribution to the implementation of this, without exaggeration, national task.

Fomin conducted research on the physiology of fatigue and in 1964 presented his candidate’s dissertation “Mental and physical performance of schoolchildren” for defense. In 1972, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the study of immunity.

Since 1964, a group of faculty teachers: Yu.V. Katukov, A.L. Lobanov, G.I. Chevychalov - conducts research to study the interaction of the functions of the motor and vestibular analyzers in athletes. In 1966 Yu.V. Katukov defended his Ph.D. thesis on the topic: “Characteristics of means and methods for developing motor qualities and improving vestibular reflexes in children 11-12 years old.”

Problems of age-related resistance of the body to the effects of environmental factors (mainly the influence of muscle load) were studied by N.A. Fomin, B.C. Bokovets, Yu.V. Katukov, I.A. Shklovsky, B.B. Sharov.

In the last three decades, the attention of faculty scientists has been drawn to problems of sports training methodology; physiological mechanisms of development of physical qualities and the formation of specific states of an athlete - fitness and the phase of highest functional readiness - sports form (N.M. Gorokhov, V.P. Voroshnin). During these years, immunity was studied in relation to muscle load (N.A. Fomin, V.N. Volkov), the development of the Olympic movement in the Southern Urals (Yu.M. Chernetsky), and features of physical education of schoolchildren (V.P. Gorshkov). An important area of research activity of teachers is the development of problems of professional training of specialists and improvement of sports training methods (T.A. Mikhailova, L.M. Kravtsova, V.E. Zhabakov, V.G. Makarenko, S.A. Aitkulov, V.V. Matveev, S.A. Osintsev, N.V. Gorokhov, A.B. Solovyov, etc.).

During this period, PhD theses were defended by Yu.M. Chernetsky, 1965; B.C. Bokovets, 1973; V.P. Voroshnin, 1983; N.M. Gorokhov, 1980; B.A. Vyuzhanin, 1979; V.P. Gorshkov, 1970; P.I. The history of the Ural State University of Physical Culture dates back to 1970, when a branch of the Omsk State Institute of Physical Culture was opened in Chelyabinsk. After 25 years, it was transformed into the Ural State Academy of Physical Culture, and in 2005 the academy deservedly became a university.

Today, UralGUFK is not just the only sports university in the Urals, but an entire methodological center for sports, physical education and health work in the Ural Federal District and adjacent regions. Every year, the university graduates about 2 thousand bachelors and master’s students in 40 sports, as well as specialists in health technologies. The structure of the University includes the Ekaterinburg, Sterlitamak and Ufa branches, a doctoral dissertation council, the Olympic Sports Research Institute, etc. Thanks to Ural State University of Physical Culture, the Russian sports industry is steadily replenished with specialists in the field of economics and management, law and psychology, public relations and adaptive physical culture. From July 10, 2013, by order of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation dated July 3, 2013 No. 520, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor Evgeniy Fedorovich Orekhov, a graduate of the Chelyabinsk branch of the Omsk State Institute of Physical Culture (1975), Master of Sports of the USSR in swimming, was appointed acting rector of Ural State University of Physical Culture. From 1975 to 2005, Evgeniy Fedorovich worked at the university in the positions of teacher, head of department, and vice-rector for academic affairs. Then, from 2005 to 2013, he was an employee of the National State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Health. P.F.Lesgafta as vice-rector for academic affairs. He was awarded the honorary badge “For merits in the development of physical culture and sports” (1995), the medal “80 years of GOSCOMSPORT of Russia” (2003), the anniversary medal “100 years of TRADE UNIONS OF RUSSIA” (2004). In 2011, Evgeny Fedorovich Orekhov was awarded the title “Honored Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation.”

The material and technical base of UralGUFK includes 4 educational buildings and 2 dormitories. The sports infrastructure of the university is represented by an educational and sports complex (athletics arena), halls for sports games, wrestling, boxing, gymnastics, and a ski lodge. The educational process is provided with modern computer technology; more than 30 classrooms are equipped with multimedia kits. The library collection consists of about 160 thousand publications.

The main academic building of UralGUFK has one of the best student canteens in the city, as well as the pride of the university - the museum of the history of UralGUFK and Olympic glory, the total number of exhibits of which exceeds 8 thousand units. Its famous graduates and students, outstanding athletes of the past and present make their contribution to the development of the museum. The traditions of the Olympic champions at the university have been continuing since the famous skating of Tatyana Sidorova and Svetlana Bazhanova, two -time Olympic hockey champions Sergei Makarov and Sergei Mylnikov, to the Olympic champion Biathlon Svetlana Ishmuratov and Silver winners of Olympiad Dzyudoist Vitaliy Makarovo and Volise Terina Gamova. The medal relay is being taken by current students and undergraduates of Ural State University of Physical Culture, champions and prize-winners of the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London 2012 and the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi 2014.

Thus, in London, students of UralGUFK managed to write their names in golden letters in the history of the Olympics. Judoist Mansur Isaev last year became the Olympic champion in judo, and taekwondo player Anastasia Baryshnikova won a bronze medal in taekwondo. Two years later, the entire Southern Urals cheered in Sochi for their main “Olympic hope.” Speed skater Olga Fatkulina, a master's student at Ural State University of Physical Culture, managed to meet the fans' expectations and win a silver medal at a distance of 500 meters. Semyon Elistratov, a student at the UralGUFK branch in Ufa, became an Olympic champion in short track speed skating. As part of the Summer Paralympics, graduates of the UralSUPC correspondence department significantly supplemented the athletes’ results with two more awards. Marat Romanov won silver in wheelchair curling, and Vasily Varlakov won silver in sledge hockey.

However, not only sports, but also scientific, cultural and social achievements of UralSUPC students collectively create its positive image. The teaching staff of the university is distinguished by its high scientific potential. More than 70% of teachers have academic, honorary and sports titles, and academic degrees. Over 15% of the university's scientific and teaching staff are doctors of science and professors.

The university provides scientific support for the training of Chelyabinsk teams in a number of sports. There are 5 scientific laboratories equipped with the most modern equipment. University employees have patents and grants. The University has opened the Olympic Sports Research Institute, whose work is focused on three areas of research: sports genetics, coaching and performance analysis in sports, as well as video analysis of performance in sports. The most popular and interesting results of the Institute’s activities are the compilation of an athlete’s genetic passport, the determination at an early stage of human development of his genetic predisposition to a particular sport and the identification of the risks of injuries and diseases developing in athletes. In 2011, the only interuniversity center for training sports volunteers in the region also began operating within the walls of Ural State University of Physical Culture.

Under the patronage of the university, the Center actively participates in the organization and conduct of the most significant sporting events both in Chelyabinsk and around the world. World and European championships in curling and judo, international taekwondo tournaments, stages of the World Water Polo League - all the central events of sports life in the Southern Urals were held with the help of UralGUFK volunteers. Since 2012, the volunteer movement has acquired new dimensions, moving far beyond the borders of the Southern Urals. Volunteer students from the Ural State University of Physical Culture went to work at the World Martial Arts Games in St. Petersburg, at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow, at the World Summer Universiade in Kazan, and finally, at the Olympic Games in London and at the “home” Winter Olympics -2014 in Sochi.

Based on the results of the last, the 20 best volotenets of the Chelyabinsk region were awarded letters of gratitude from the acting governor of the region, Boris Dubrovsky. At the same time, the Youth Policy Council, the Trade Union Committee of students and graduate students, the Museum Council and a sports club are successfully operating at UralGUFK. Each unit conducts a number of traditional events throughout the year as part of the educational process and extracurricular activities of students, organizing their leisure time and cultural and patriotic education. Every month, students and teachers take part in festive events and sports competitions within the university; the best represent the university on the “big stage”. For example, in April 2014, more than a hundred students of Ural State University of Physical Culture performed at the city festival “Student Spring”, 80 of them were among the winners and prize-winners of the city competition. University students actively demonstrate themselves in research activities. As a rule, they represent the university at various conferences, competitions and olympiads at city, regional, all-Russian and even international levels.

The management of UralGUFK supports students' motivation to acquire knowledge by creating favorable conditions for study and leisure activities.
