Odessa National Polytechnic University cooperates with educational, scientific and production centers in 20 countries.

In 2000, a UNESCO Chair was opened at the Odessa National Polytechnic University.

In 2006, by the decision of the Magna Charta Universitatum Observatory board, ONPU was accepted among the European universities that signed the Magna Carta.

How to become an ONPU student? This and other questions from our readers were answered during the “direct line” by Valery Pavlovich Malakhov, Rector of the Odessa National Polytechnic University, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Chairman of the Council of Rectors of the Odessa Region, Honored Worker of Science and Technology, Honorary citizen of the city of Odessa.

– Hello, Valery Pavlovich! My brother is going to enter the Polytechnic this year, but he hasn’t decided on his specialty. What advice would you give him?

– The specialties are all good (http://www.opu.ua/ section “Applicants”). To decide, you need to study their characteristics and settle on what your heart lies in. Your brother must take into account the main thing: he is not just entering a university, but choosing his life’s work. An accurate guideline will allow him to more easily master his specialty and ultimately become a successful person.

– Please tell me how exactly the points are taken into account for admission?

– The competition at ONPU is held based on the sum of points of external testing certificates in the general and core subject. The common subject is Ukrainian language and literature. Applicants who are not certified in it take an entrance exam in the language subject for which the grades are indicated in their certificates.

The major subject depends on the institute (faculty) chosen for admission. For the Institute of Business, Economics and Information Technology, this is mathematics. For the Faculty of Chemical Technology - chemistry and mathematics. For the Faculty of Humanities - the history of Ukraine. For all other institutes (faculties) - physics or mathematics. Please note that applicants who have received at least 124 points in each of two subjects are allowed to participate in the competition.

– Isn’t computer science already giving up?

- Not this year.

Certificates are required

– Hello, I am interested in distance learning. Is it necessary to provide testing certificates if the applicant graduated from school five years ago?

– Testing certificates are required to be provided whenever you graduate from school. Moreover, last year’s result of external testing is not taken into account.

– Please tell me how an applicant will be assessed if, say, his score in Ukrainian language and literature is high? Is it more important than a math result?

– In the competition sheet, the applicant whose total score is higher receives an advantage. If it is equal to the indicator of other participants in the competition, then the scores in the major subject play a decisive role.

– Hello, Valery Pavlovich! I graduated from school with a gold medal. Are there any benefits available to me now?

– There are no special conditions for admission to universities this year for medalists. If you have external testing certificates (with a score of at least 124), you will participate in the competition on an equal basis with everyone else. However, the rules stipulate that you have a preference over others “all other things being equal.” That is, if someone else scores the same amount of points, then you get an advantage. By the way, experience convinces us that this is also a significant benefit.

– Can I apply for different specialties at your university?

– We do not limit the number of applications submitted. However, I encourage all guys to make informed choices and not rely on luck. When choosing a specialty, a person chooses fate, and handing it over to the will of fortune is, at a minimum, short-sighted.

– Hello, please tell me when and how can I find out that I am enrolled in a budget-funded form of education?

– On August 1, the lists of applicants recommended for admission will be announced. Then the countdown of five days begins, during which you must provide original certificates and medical certificates, if you submitted copies earlier. But even if your name is not on the list of those recommended for enrollment in the budget, do not rush to leave, as the situation may change dramatically in the next five days. Judging by experience, not all applicants submit original documents, and some even transfer to another university during the admission process. To avoid mistakes, take the phone number of the admissions office in advance. You can also find out about the results of the competition on the university website (http://www.opu.ua/ section “Applicants”).

– Good afternoon, Valery Pavlovich! Now there is a crisis, and parents are having a hard time with their salaries. My certificate scores are low. What do you recommend doing?

– In your case, there are four options. The first is to try to get it on the budget. The second is to take preparatory courses with us in order to enter a university next year. An important feature of these courses is the conduct of trial testing with a discussion of the results and common mistakes. Thirdly, you have the opportunity to enroll in a contract form of study. By the way, its cost is from five hryvnia per day: at today's prices this is quite a bit. You can also enroll in the correspondence department. In this case, the cost of training will be even lower, and there will still be an opportunity for part-time work.

– Dear Valery Pavlovich, until what date can you submit documents and do you work on Saturdays?

– In accordance with the Admission Rules, admission deadlines will be until July 29, 2009. We work Mon-Fri from 9.00 to 16.00 and Sat from 9.00 to 13.00.

"Special" Institute

– Is it possible to enroll on a budget at your existing German faculty?

– The former German technical faculty now bears the name of the Ukrainian-German educational and scientific institute. Only the essence of the institute remains the same: it provides training and retraining of specialists with higher education, taking into account the experience of leading universities in Germany. In the first three years, students of the faculty intensively study the German language while mastering regular programs. After the third year, they undergo language practice at universities in Germany. In the fourth year, students are taught in special disciplines in German. Graduates of this institute receive a Ukrainian bachelor's, specialist's, and master's diploma. Students who perform well can be recommended to complete and defend their thesis project at universities in Germany and be awarded a German diploma. In addition to a diploma in their main specialty, graduates receive a German translator certificate. There is only a contract form of training available.

– Until what date can you submit documents for admission to ONPU and is the admissions office open on Saturday and Sunday?

– Documents can be submitted until July 29 inclusive. On Saturday the commission is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- Good afternoon! My son wants to study at the military department. Is there such an opportunity at the Polytechnic?

– There is such a possibility. The structure of ONPU includes the former Odessa Institute of Ground Forces. Here, starting from the second semester of the second year, students are trained in the reserve officer training program. By the way, we have students from all universities in Odessa, but polytechnics have advantages.

– Is it possible to say that upon admission there are no exams taken at all?

– Entrance exams are allowed only for certain categories of applicants. These are military personnel who have just been transferred to the reserve, as well as disabled people of groups I and II, who, due to their physical capabilities, could not pass external testing (and applicants must document this). An exception is made for Ukrainian citizens who graduated from school abroad. For persons of the above categories, entrance examinations to the Polytechnic will be held on July 30 and 31.

The university is quite popular

– I am interested in distance learning. Is it possible to apply on a budget?

– Yes, although the number of budget places for correspondence students is limited. Come, present external testing certificates and become a student.

– What if I have an associate’s degree?

– Then you can enroll in a shortened form of study. An external testing certificate is not needed for this. To enroll, you just need to come to the admissions committee of the selected faculty, from where you will be sent to the certification commission, which will determine the compliance of your specialty with our university specialties. The duration of study for a bachelor's degree in this shortened form, depending on the specialty, is from two to three years.

– How do you organize the employment of graduates?

– Even in the most difficult times, when the industry was virtually at a standstill, we always employed our graduates. Now, on the basis of ONPU, there is a so-called “Career Center”, which holds job fairs twice a year. These are events during which graduates have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with vacancies, as well as working conditions and pay at enterprises, firms, institutions, of which there are usually at least a hundred. I would like to specifically note that all smart students are lured away by employers in their fourth year. Let me give you a fresh fact. The rating was recently published, during which representatives of 531 employer firms and 300 expert firms were surveyed. According to their assessment, our university ranks 7th among 234 universities in Ukraine. This speaks volumes about how employers treat ONPU graduates.

– Are ONPU students well-equipped?

“We have seven comfortable dormitories for more than four thousand people. All nonresident students receive places regardless of the form of study, even upon admission. ONPU dormitories are located in a very convenient location. Nearby is a large park with artificial lakes and a sports complex with a stadium.
