general information

The year 1972 for Mari El was marked by the opening of the only classical university in the republic - Mari State University.

In 2008, a reorganization was carried out in the form of joining the State Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “Mari State Pedagogical Institute named after. N.K. Krupskaya." In January 2010, the Mari Agrarian College became a branch of MarSU.

Today, Mari State University is a complex of 6 academic buildings, 8 dormitories and the Olympian health camp on the shores of the beautiful Lake Yalchik.

The university conducts research in many main areas of the humanities, physico-mathematics, biological-chemical, agricultural and technical fields. They are headed by leading scientists - doctors of science. Research issues are expanding every year due to promising areas of science and technology. Business relations are being established with the largest domestic and foreign educational and scientific centers. University students are winners and prize-winners of major international, all-Russian and regional Olympiads and competitions.

MarSU carries out an important mission in ensuring sustainable dynamic socio-cultural development of the republic, as well as integration into the European and world scientific, educational and cultural space. Significant in this regard is the creation, on the initiative of the Mari State University, of the International Association of Finno-Ugric Universities.

Evidence that MarSU has become an integral and important part of Mari El is its graduates, who form the basis of the republic’s personnel potential and work in all sectors of the economy and social sphere.

The university plays a special role in training personnel for regions and areas of dense Mari residence. Hundreds of boys and girls from the Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Sverdlovsk regions, Perm Territory, Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, and Tatarstan received higher professional education at MarSU, especially in philology, culture and art, pedagogy, journalism, and regional studies. The university trains scientific and teaching personnel for higher education for them.

Today, the structure of the scientific library of MarSU includes 13 departments, 7 subscriptions and 7 reading rooms. Its services are used by more than 16 thousand people, book distribution is more than 1 million 100 thousand copies per year. Version 10 of the MARC SQL program has been installed. The library has an electronic catalog that contains more than 100 thousand records, carries out extensive humanitarian and educational work among students, organizes exhibitions of new literature, thematic exhibitions and literature reviews, oral journals, evening dialogues, and presentations.

In 1985, an editorial and publishing center was opened at the university. The total volume of published materials per year is more than 2000 printed sheets, including monographs, conference materials and scientific papers, educational and teaching aids, and others. Every year RIC participates in the Leipzig and International Book Fair and Exhibition in Moscow. Since 2007, the scientific journal “Bulletin of the Mari State University” has been published.

An example of the high quality of education at MarSU and the trust in the university on the part of the Government of the Republic is that on its basis in 2007 the Small Academy of Public Administration (MAPA) was opened in Mari El. The goal of MASU is to prepare leaders from among the students of the republic’s universities who have skills and competence in the socio-political sphere, organizational and grassroots work. One of its most important tasks is the formation of a personnel reserve for state and municipal authorities.

At MarSU, the first scientific school in Russia was created on the problem of “Social and psychological rehabilitation of children with disabilities”, the first domestic breed of guinea fowl “Volga White” was bred, there are achievements recognized by the scientific world in the study of the molecular mechanisms of biochemical processes in mitochondria.

The university pays close attention to cultural, sports and recreational work, and a student club has been created. The most popular events among boys and girls are the initiation of first-year students into students, the “Voice of Youth” and “Student Spring” festivals, Tatiana’s Day - the Day of Russian Students, the annual beauty contests “Miss Student”, “Miss Lingua”, “Miss Students” Finno-Ugria", festival "Humanitarian Games", sports competition for freshmen. At the student club there are folklore ensembles “Mariy Mursem”, a modern dance studio “Fors”, a vocal and variety studio “Kurai”, a theater-studio “Inspiration”, KVN teams, etc.

The location of the academic buildings of the Mari State University is very convenient, and finding them is not difficult.
