Разница между many и much

По-английски предложение будет звучать так: «There are many animals in the zoo».

В переводе на английский язык это будет выглядеть так: «many tigers, many elephants, many bears, many monkeys, many cages».

Словосочетания в этом случае будут выглядеть так: «much food, much meat, much milk, much water».

В современном английском языке в утвердительных предложениях вместо местоимений much и many все чаще употребляется их синоним a lot of .

Это универсальное местоимение, так как подходит для существительных одушевленных — a lot of people и неодушевленных — a lot of books, для исчисляемых — a lot of minutes и неисчисляемых — a lot of time.

В тех речевых ситуациях, когда вы затрудняетесь с выбором между many и much, используйте a lot of – не ошибетесь.

Например: «A lot of children came to the zoo to see a new-born polar bear».

There are many candles on the fireplace shelf. –

There is much soup in the pan. –

В этих предложениях many и much легко можно заменить на a lot of, причем смысл предложений не изменится.

  • How many tulips are there in the vase?
  • How many children do you have?

С выражением How much (сколько, как много) порядок слов такой же, как и в случае с How many.

  • How much salt do you take in your salad?
  • How much money do you need to be happy?

В отрицательных предложениях словосочетания not many и not much переводятся на русский язык как «мало», «немного».

Например:

  • Not many people like bats.
  • She does not eat much meat (существительное meat – неисчисляемое).

Иногда после местоимений many или much следует частица of.

  • Many of my business partners live in the country.
  • Much of the butter is spoiled.
