Look at a strong family and you are likely to find one with strong family traditions. Whether it is activities that the family always does, the everyday routines or ways they celebrate holidays and special occasions, these family rituals bring a sense of belonging, familiarity and routine to family members. In strong families, members become more committed to each other when they spend time together and create bonds. Traditions provide a sense of continuity, understanding, connectedness and love that strengthens family closeness. Family traditions are also opportunities for families to have “good times” and establish “good memories.” Rituals touch the hearts of family members in a positive way and help members feel good about themselves and each other.
Wayne Matthews, human development specialist with North Carolina Cooperative Extension, explains that family traditions help form the story line for a family’s unique history with each generation adding or deleting certain traditions that enhance the family story. Matthews shares other benefits of family traditions. Family Traditions:
Encourage family members to spend time together. Quality time together is necessary to build and maintain strong family relationships.
Allow members of the family to share the ups and downs of life, supporting one another when problems arise and celebrating the successes when they occur.
Help establish and communicate what is really important to a family and its members – its values, its belief system and its place in the larger world.
Provide a means of working out the family’s interpersonal dynamics, dealing with conflict, hurt feelings and misunderstandings.
Provide a means of sharing love, laughter, loyalty, unity and a sense of commitment.
Traditions don’t have to be extravagant, intense or require a lot of planning. They can be as simple as reading to your child every night in the same comfy chair, having a movie and pizza night every Friday or discussing things you are grateful for around the dinner table each evening. Traditions are the glue that keeps a family together. We all have very busy lifestyles, and adding a small tradition here or there can make all the difference to your family. But what do you do if your family doesn’t have many traditions? Well, you create them of course! Somebody has to create all these little rituals, so why not let it be you?
There are some family tradition ideas to get you started:
The birthday hat. Get a hat that is well suited to your family and make this the “official birthday hat.” The idea is that each person wears it at their birthday dinner, whether that be at home or out in a restaurant. It can look like a cake complete with big felt candles out of the top. It’s ridiculously awesome.
Birthday cakes. Create the birthday boy or girl’s favorite type of cake. Is it cheesecake, devil’s food cake, or black forest cake? Or is it not even cake at all? Do they prefer pies, cookies, or cupcakes? Whatever it is, make their favorite treat an annual tradition for their birthday.
New job . When someone in your family gets a new job, a promotion, or a raise, create a tradition that they take you out for dinner. It doesn’t have to be a fancy or expensive dinner – you can go for pizza or wraps.
Christmas dainty exchange . Christmas can be a very stressful time, but baking all those Christmas goodies doesn’t have to add to it. Include as many or as few people as you want, and choose two to three items each to bake. Bake enough to share with everyone in your group and agree to a date when you’ll meet up and exchange the goodies you’ve all made. You get a huge variety of baked goods, and you don’t have to spend weeks preparing. Who doesn’t want that?
Saturday mornings in bed. Choose a morning on the weekend to spend in bed with your family. You don’t need to spend hours laying around, but 15 to 30 minutes is a nice length of time. Try having coffee, tea, or milk with a couple of cookies. Relaxing and taking a few minutes to connect with your family can be a great way to kick off a weekend.
Easter egg hunt . A classic in many households around the world. It is always a lot of fun and the morning would be full of laughter.
Potluck . This is a great way for extended family members to showcase their culinary talents. If you decide to do this monthly or bi-monthly, consider themes – make one night Mexican, and the next time Thai, followed by Italian. Theme nights can introduce you to a whole new world of cooking. Bring print-outs of the recipe so people can take it home with them.
Family Olympics . When the weather is nice, spend the day at the park, at the lake, or at the beach. Decide on sporting events for whole family – think bean bag toss, horseshoes, badminton, volleyball, and synchronized swimming. Create teams, or compete individually and have prizes for all participants.
Creating a feeling of unity, warmth and closeness with your family is priceless. There are no rules and there is no “right” way to do this. So take initiative, get creative, make it happen and most importantly have fun!
Let"s talk about family traditions
It goes without saying that the family is very important as a unit in our society. Nothing else but family can be an emotional centre of people"s lives and a transmitter of culture. Understanding between all members of the family and consideration for others are very important in family relationships. Tenderness, warm-heartedness and respect must always be present in the family to make it friendly. I do think family traditions help its members respect and support one another.
A lot of activities can help members of a family to be on friendly terms: discussing all the family plans, going on trips together, visiting museums, theatres, exhibitions and exchanging opinions about them, sharing joys and sorrows.
If to speak about my family, I can say I enjoy our honest and open relationship. I like it when parents trust their children, give them freedom, rely on them and respect them. In my opinion these things make family relations warm and pleasant.
Unfortunately, we can"t spend much time together during a week. My parents have to work a lot to earn money for our family. But in the evening they try to spend as much time as possible with my sister and me. Everybody in our family likes having tea when we can speak about our working day, share impressions and good news, discuss our challenges and make plans for the coming day. It"s one of our family traditions. To my mind, it helps us learn more about one another and makes our family united.
Every member of our family looks forward to the weekend. We enjoy going to the cinema and cafes together. In winter we often ski and skate. In other seasons we enjoy riding bikes, going to theme parks or visiting famous sights of our country. We visit our extended family and often help them in the garden. It"s also our family tradition to spend summer holidays together either at the seaside or in the country, which I enjoy very much.
We have other family traditions. Our family see the New Year at home. We cook a lot of delicious food for the night meal which usually starts at 10 p.m. A goose or chicken stuffed with apples is our traditional New Year dish. We sing songs, play games and give presents to one another.
We have a family tradition to celebrate birthdays of each member of the family. On these days we usually have parties. Friends and relatives come with presents and flowers. Our last family birthday was mother"s birthday. We wanted to make it a special day since it was her 38th birthday. We had selected a nice present for her and my father and I had done all the cooking. The table was nicely laid up. The party was fantastic. All the guests seemed to enjoy themselves a lot.
As you can see, consideration for others is very important in our family relationships. We have our family traditions which make our life more exciting and interesting, help to understand one another better, to express our emotions and feelings. Our parents feel great affection for us and try to bring us up in a proper way. They devote their free time to us and this makes our home the happiest place for me.

Summer holidays
Every summer we all go on a camping trip. For a few days we stay in a cottage on a lakeside. We swim in the lake and lie in the sun, sometimes we go to the nearest village for a day out.
Every day we build a fire and cook food on it. This is the process that unites the whole family. Somemake a fire, others cut vegetables and cook. This is the moment when we don’t stop talking to each other and laughing at jokes.
Grandmother’s birthday
Fortunately, my grandmother lives not too far from us so we often go to visit her. But her birthday is a special day which everyone looks forward to.
This is the day when all the relatives come to her place to celebrate. My family is very big. I have uncles, aunts and cousins. My grandmother’s birthday is the day when we all sit around one big table.
Personal achievements
We always support and help each other in different life situations. This builds the confidence and helps become successful. This is why personal achievements of each of us are the reason for everyone’s joy.
Such events as promotion, admission to the university or victory in a competition are celebrated in my family. Usually on this day we go to a restaurant and spend the rest of the day together.
New Year
New Year is a family holiday. Traditionally, we stay at home on this day. In the evening we sit at the table and remember everything that happened to us throughout the year. After dinner we usually leave to meet our friends at the New Year’s tree in the city centre.

Usually it happens on holidays, as they can be days off and it is a tradition for some holidays to gather together. Such holidays are called family ones and usually they are similar in different countries, though there can be some exceptions. As for me, I think that family holidays are Christmas, New Year, Easter and Birthdays. In spite of a different origin they are celebrated in the family circle, but of course, some close friends can be also invited.

Christmas is the first and the most widely known family holiday all over the world. different dates for its celebration because of some religious views, it does not change the way it is celebrated in many countries. Another popular family holiday is New Year. It is celebrated on December, 31, when people welcome the coming of the next year. Usually many preparations take place before the holiday. People stand in long queues in order to buy products for their New Year tables and spend long hours in front of the cooker or oven some exotic dishes. Our New Year holiday is associated with champagne, fireworks and one famous salad called Olivier, sometimes accompanied by TV programs. When the clock strikes twelve, people cheer and make wishes. They are happy to forget past offences and misunderstandings and start the new one with everything good.

Easter is a Christian holiday, when people celebrate . It is always a day off, so taking place in spring all the family members try to spend it in nature. Forty days before the holiday people have to follow lent. So it is not surprising for Easter so much. This holiday also has some preparations to be made. All the hostesses bake Easter bread and paint eggs in different colors. In the evening or in the morning of the next day they go to the church. Then the family tries to spend together all the day celebrating and treating others with their pastry. In Germany there is one more tradition for children. Family traditions
In every family
there are different traditions. Family traditions help people to
feel themselves part of the whole, strengthen the family unity
and simply to enjoy happy memories. I think that the moments
spent in the circle of your family are the most precious.
We have a great tradition in our family. On May Day we usually
go to the country where my grandparents live and spend there our
days off. I often help my grandma with gardening or go fishing
with my granddad. We love to make up picnics. My father usually
cooks Russian fish soup and grilled vegetables. We often sit up
late at night and look through our family albums. I can sit for
hours studying each image and recalling life events. It is so
touching. If it is summer, on weekends we go to the river to
sunbathe and swim. We play beach volleyball or badminton. To
tell the truth, I like to "unite" with the nature. As for me, I
can spend hours staring at the water. At night we often build a
fire and sing to a guitar. At these moments I feel the happiest
person in the world.
Another family tradition is decorating our New Year tree with
ornaments, tinsel and candles. As I am fond of handicrafts, I
usually make scrapbooks of our celebrations. My mother usually
makes New Year"s tree decorations and it definitely adds a
special festive touch to the New Year decor. Besides, we usually
celebrate New Year at home, in the circle of our family. I get
up early in the morning and help my mom to cook a festive
supper. It is a tradition in our country to have a certain menu
for this holiday. Usually it is a baked goose, a famous Russian
salad called Olivier, jellied minced meat and, of course,
champagne. Then I go into my room to put my gala dress on.
Sometimes my mom asks me to help her lay the table. When all
preparations are behind, we watch TV and wait for our guests to
come. When the Kremlin chimes strike twelve times, all of us
make wishes, hold glasses of champagne and wish each other Happy
New Year. Children usually receive long-awaited presents from
Grandfather Frost and Snow Maiden. Besides, New Year fireworks
are must-have for this holiday.
Frankly speaking, I love all holidays but my birthday is my
favorite one. My parents usually wake me up early in the morning
with a nice song "Happy birthday, dear Sophia" and give me their
presents and flowers. We always invite guests to our place and
make fun. We sing songs, dance and play games. Then, suddenly,
all the light goes out and my parents bring a very nice cake
with burning candles. I make my wish and blow out all candles.
In the end of the party all of us come outside and set off
fireworks.
