Galle is a delightful and unexpected mixture of crumbling colonial history and exotic, tropical beauty.

Inside the walls of a fort that has been listed World Heritage UNESCO, you can see Dutch manors, churches and museums, as well as the Oriental Hotel, originally the home of Dutch governors. Halle is home to a creative community and attracts many international artists, writers and poets.

5. Kandy

The calm and peaceful atmosphere of Kandy, in the heart of the Sri Lankan highlands, is probably a result of the city's bucolic setting of a tranquil lake in a bowl of hills. It's bright, unique city, which resisted Portuguese and Dutch colonization for three centuries, is a bastion of widespread Buddhist faith on the island.

Kandy's main attraction is the octagonal Dalada Maligawa, or Temple of the Tooth, which attracts hundreds of pilgrims for daily ceremonies honoring the relic. According to legend, the tooth was taken from the Buddha while he was lying on the funeral pyre and smuggled to Sri Lanka.

6. Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a unique attraction in central Sri Lanka, 160 kilometers northeast of Colombo. The remains of an ancient royal fortress and city date back to 477 AD. they stand on a huge rock that rises 180 meters above the surrounding plain. King Kasyapa built a fort to protect himself from the attack of his brother, who stole the throne after killing his father.

The only way into the city is through the massive carved jaws of a lion - the name Sigiriya comes from 'giriya', meaning 'jaws and throat' and 'Sinha' meaning 'lion'.

7. Trincomalee

Ancient seaport Trincomalee or Trinco is located on the north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, and has a perfect natural harbor, which was immediately appreciated by European sailors. The Danes were the first to come here in 1617.

Interactive map of Sri Lanka with cities and resorts

There are so many opportunities for a varied holiday in Sri Lanka that it is quite difficult to fit into one paragraph. The country's capital, Colombo, is a classic metropolis and at the same time a cultural treasury. The capital of the ancient rulers of Kandy, rightfully considered the cultural center of the island, or Dambulla, which is a religious complex, rich archaeological sites. For lovers active rest I can recommend Kalutara, where there are many opportunities for sports entertainment and Hikkaduwa, there are excellent conditions for diving. Island Sri Lanka attracts visitors with excellent opportunities for a carefree beach pastime.

Geographical location of Sri Lanka

The state is located in southern Asia and is separated from the Hindustan Peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Southern Cape The island of Sri Lanka is called Cape Dondra, and western cape- Dutch Bay. Most of the island is made up of coastal lowlands. There are mountains in the center of the island, highest peak of which is Mount Pidurutalagala (2524 meters).

Territory of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a territory of 65,610 square meters and ranks 120th in this indicator in the world. Almost the entire coastline of the country consists of magnificent sandy beaches.

All the TOP main attractions that I recommend visiting are marked on the map (below) for clarity.

Exact coordinates of each attraction:

  10. Coral reef in Hikkaduwa: 6.134924 80.099547.

I have described the route visiting the main attractions below.

If you go to Sri Lanka between May and November, it will be quieter for swimming and diving East End islands (Pasikuda, Trincomalle), and if you travel from winter to April, then it is better to go to the southwest of the island (Tangalle, Hikkaduwa) for a clear and calm ocean and for the underwater world.

Below detailed description attractions that I recommend visiting.

Sights of Sri Lanka in photos

view of Sigiriya rock at sunrise

Perhaps this is the most impressive place not only in Sri Lanka, but in general in my entire life.

Up there, on Mount Pidurangala, overlooking Big world, you feel like a Creator, a part of God, possessing great potential and power. Very inspiring!

Coordinates of Mount Pidurangala: 7.966209 80.761696.

The best time to go to Mount Pidurangala is when the sun rises, at dawn.

Dawn on Mount Pidurangala and two lovers

How to get to Mount Pidurangala?

You can rent a bicycle and you will have to ride from the village of Sigiriya to Mount Pidurangala for about 25 minutes. fast speed, in complete darkness with flashlights.

It’s better to negotiate with a tuk tuk so that he will pick you up at the hotel, take you to the mountain and wait for you there for an hour or two.

That's exactly what we did, although we had a plan to first go to dawn on bicycles, but we were warned by three people that this could be life-threatening, because... On the road to Pidurangala, in the early morning, flocks of wild elephants often run across each other.

Dawn on Mount Pidurangala

The cost of a tuk tuk ride to Mount Pidurangala and back to the city (about 22 minutes of travel) cost us 600 rupees or 230 rubles for two.

The entrance ticket to Pidurangala rock is 500 rupees or 190 rubles (March 2017).

Why did we choose to climb Mount Pidurangala at sunrise and not Mount Sigiriya?

  1. Mount Sigiriya is not cheap - $25 per ticket;
  2. Much more people choose to climb Mount Sigiriya;
  3. It is easier to climb and descend Mount Pidurangala - the sun is not too hot;
  4. Mount Pidurangala offers views of Mount Sigiriya.

I capture the beauty of the sunrise on Mount Pidurangala

Why you should climb Mount Sigiriya - to see ancient frescoes and learn the history of Mount Sigiriya.

Gal Vihara is the sloping wall with four Buddha statues in the historical city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka.

I pray to Buddha in Gal Vihara

Myself historical city Polonnaruwa is worth a visit if you love: ruins, historical monuments, studying history and monkeys.

Personally, I really enjoyed devoting a whole day to the ruins, the historical part of the city of Polonnaruwa, where the Gal Vihara monument is located. We moved around the territory of the ruins on bicycles.

For an entrance ticket to the area with ruins in Polonnaruwa, tourists will need to pay $25.

Gal Vihar coordinates: 7.966074 81.00494.

Do not forget also that on the territory historical monuments, including Gal Vihar, you will need to take off your shoes and cover your shoulders and knees.

Pasikuda is located below Trincomalle, in the east of the island. Whether or not you should visit the Pasikuda resort is a matter of seasonality.

The season in the town of Pasikuda begins in May and ends closer to winter. It is during this period that in the east of the island of Sri Lanka the ocean will be calm and the water will be clear for visiting the underwater world (snorkeling, diving).

Get travel insurance before traveling

Nothing is more important than safety own life and health.

Before each trip, it is better to insure yourself by taking out insurance. A proven insurance search engine, Cherehapa (below), always helps me with this.

In the Cherehapa insurance company database there are only verified ones Insurance companies and agents who can come to the rescue at the right time!

The city of Kandy itself did not impress me at the time of February 2017: in my opinion it turned out to be quite dirty (many birds shitting around) and not calm (many people constant movement transport, a lot of people asking for money).

Kandy city, Bogambara lake

I would not recommend visiting it unless you are planning to watch the only event of the year - Esala Perahera. You can read about it on the Internet. This is a grand spectacle. Very similar to the carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

The Temple of the Tooth Relic also did not leave any pleasant impressions, other than a huge queue for no apparent reason and a decent waste of money. True, if you are a spiritually advanced person and love places of power, then this place can really shake you up, like my good friend.

Trees from parallel worlds V botanical garden Kandy

Just like Central Park in New York, it left behind only the most pleasant emotions, delight and desire to see it again. Judge for yourself - there are more than 4,000 species of plants from all over the world.

Cute Sri Lankan couple and beautiful tree in Kandy Botanical Garden

The park itself was born back in 1371 and you can feel it: a huge variety of the most different trees from all over the planet, which are hundreds of years old!

Exact coordinates of the Kandy Botanical Garden in Sri Lanka: 7.270779 80.595764.

Atmosphere of relaxation, picnics, joy

Entrance ticket for adults: 1100 rupees or 450 rubles (as of March 2017).

I really enjoyed the Swedish lunch at the cafe in the center of the botanical garden. It ran from 12 noon and cost about 800 rupees per person. There was a large selection of plant-based and vegan food, which I was happy about.

Dancing trees at Kandy Botanical Gardens

It’s also great if you take your favorite food with you and have a picnic in a beautiful place in the garden. Don't forget to bring a water bottle with you.

Yes, this is, of course, not Adam’s Peak itself, 2.3 km high, but it is, first of all, a beautiful, soulful place that I easily and happily visited three times during my 5 days in the town of Ella.

Part mountain range small Adam's peak

Exact coordinates of the place: 6.865051 81.063016

The entrance ticket here is free.

Find me in the photo. Small Adam's Peak

At one point, fast moving clouds appeared on the small peak of Adam, everything was shrouded in fog - a beautiful sight.

It is convenient to arrive to the city of Ella by train along the most picturesque route: Kandy - Ella.

road to Ella by train from Kandy

I even edited a short video from Small Adam's Peak. See below.

You may also be interested in visiting tea plantations and tasting.

Yes, tea plantations, just like in the city of Nuwara Eliya, can be found in Ella and there are tea factories, but not in such large quantities and areas.

Nuwara Eliya is colder than Ella. It is advisable to take a jacket, hat, and warm pants with you there.

Ella Rock is beautiful, tall mountains. They are located in the city of Ella and it is more convenient to get here with a guide, because... the road winds, you can get confused and the maps me map and instructions in travel blogs did not help us get out of the Sri Lankan forest.

road to Ella Rock

We (two men, two women) took probably 2 times longer to get from Ella Rock to the city than if we had taken a guide with us. We got very lost and wandered a lot along different paths.

I was exhausted and completely wet, so without hesitation I recommend taking a guide with you. I'm glad I didn't pick up any leeches there.

Ella Rock coordinates: 6.856047 81.053067

view from Mount Ella Rock

On the way to Ella Rock there will be a small cafe with coconuts, various snacks, and tea. There you can have a snack, relax, hide from the rain, and gain strength.

Also, I highly recommend walking 10 minutes after Ella Rock to the next one observation deck at coordinates: 6.850809 81.052448. We didn’t meet a single person there, there were very beautiful trees along the way and, most importantly, no less breathtaking views opened up from there.

The same place after Ella Rock

Tangalle first captivated me back in 2013.

The atmosphere of Sri Lankan simple life still reigns here. happy life, where locals like to drink coconut, many fish, like to swim on weekends and are happy with what they have, and tourists are not strong influence on their way of life.

The ocean itself is calm and optimal for swimming from winter to spring.

I'm on a beach without waves

Where I took the photo above is a beach without waves. The waves are surrounded by large boulders and this place is great for snorkeling. I saw about 12-15 in the water on this beach different types fish

A slender man of about 40 years old rents out a mask with a snorkel in the mornings for little money.

The coordinates of this beach in Tangalle are: 6.022628 80.800878.

On weekends there are usually a lot of locals here, so come to this beach on weekdays.

8. Whales in Mirissa

Whales, in principle, surround the unique island of Ceylon on all sides. It is believed that the ocean near the island of Ceylon has special, alluring water that is attractive to the world’s largest mammals.

In winter, I took a whale watching excursion in the town of Mirissa, where the ocean was not raging. It cost me $25, including a hearty breakfast and insurance.

On an excursion, people are waiting to see whales

The downside of this excursion is that there are a dozen boats, one of which you will sail on in pursuit of poor whales and dolphins. If you respect the freedom of wild animals and are against zoos, I do not recommend taking this excursion.

I really dreamed of seeing a live whale and I saw it!

Locals rock out in Halle

one of the shops in Halle

I liked the city of Galle and it would be more suitable creative people, lovers and connoisseurs of the beauty of buildings, design, buyers of original gizmos.

Galle city coordinates: 6.032826 80.214946.

It is convenient to come and see the town of Galle from Hikkaduwa. We arrived by bus, which takes about 15-20 minutes from Hikkaduwa. Hikkaduwa has a large selection of inexpensive and good accommodation.

10.Underwater world of Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is a beach resort with many Russians and many underwater inhabitants near the Hikkaduwa coral reef.

Coral reef coordinates: 6.134924 80.099547.

Near the beach you can rent a mask with a snorkel, a life jacket and fins. Renting one mask with a snorkel for 2 hours cost me 500 rupees or 200 rubles.

Right off the coast near the coral reef you can already see a huge crowd of different fish.

I regretted that I didn’t take an underwater camera with me, because there really is something to photograph here. There were probably hundreds of fish around me. Very impressive!

It is this route with sights that I recommend including in your travel program in Sri Lanka. For minimal distances you can visit maximum interesting places.

Of course, there are many other interesting places to visit in Sri Lanka, but after 2 months of traveling there, I remember these as the most unforgettable and interesting ones.

However, remember that seasonality is important.

If you are traveling around Sri Lanka in winter (from winter to spring), then the route points: 2. Trincomalee and 3. Pasikuda are better not to visit and vice versa, if you are traveling from May to October, then I do not recommend visiting the southwest of the island, namely 8. Tangalle and 10. Hikkaduwa to explore undersea world or take a swim.

If I didn’t explain it clearly, this happens - ask a question at the end of the article.

Transport, which is best for moving between attractions in Sri Lanka, is best viewed on 2 sites: rome2rio.com/ru (trains, buses, tuk tuk, water transport) and maps.google.ru (buses)

I will be glad to receive feedback on this article and answer your questions (at the bottom of the article).

Inexperienced tourists who are not very well versed in geography are sometimes not only interested in where Sri Lanka is located on the world map, but also ask such stupid questions as, for example, “What country is this?” I remember after returning from my first trip to Sri Lanka, many of my friends and acquaintances said: “ Sri Lanka? Where is it?"It is not surprising that many people do not know where Sri Lanka is on the world map.
To begin with, we note that Sri Lanka is an island country. Previously, this island was called Ceylon. In general, it is stupid to ask what country this is, Sri Lanka, since this is Sri Lanka independent country within the boundaries of a large island.
Now let's answer the question of where exactly Sri Lanka is located. Former Ceylon is located in the Indian Ocean, between 5 and 10 degrees northern latitude. The distance to India at the narrowest point of the strait dividing the countries is about 50 kilometers. The long but narrow island of Sri Lanka is home to 21 million people. Of these, Sinhalese constitute the largest proportion and Tamils are the second largest population group.
Thanks to its favorable location in South-East Asia and the northern Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka has always been considered an important location on many trade routes. The population of the island knew this and managed to properly take advantage of this advantage by exporting coconuts, spices and the world famous Ceylon tea and rubber.
Where is Sri Lanka on the world map? The island can be found fairly quickly at a glance at the map. To do this, you first need to find Indian Ocean, and at the very top of this ocean, to the right of India, you will see the island of Sri Lanka. Usually this island is marked on all general geographical maps.
Where is the capital of Sri Lanka? Colombo, the capital and economic center, is located on west coast and has coordinates of 7 degrees north latitude and 80 degrees east longitude. About 700,000 people live and work in Colombo. This is an important political and Cultural Center Sri Lanka.

Area of Sri Lanka, length, width and geographical coordinates

Belonging to the continent of Asia, Sri Lanka covers an area of 64,630 square kilometers territory and 980 square kilometers of water area. This makes Sri Lanka the 123rd largest country in the world by area with with total area 65610 square kilometers.
Since Sri Lanka is a large island, it is not correct to name any specific geographical coordinates. Northernmost Big City, Jaffna, has the following coordinates: 9 degrees 40 minutes north latitude and 79 degrees 51 minutes east longitude. The southernmost major city, Halle, has coordinates: 6 degrees 2 minutes north latitude and 80 degrees 13 minutes east longitude.
The length of the island of Sri Lanka is 452 km, and the width at its widest point is 227 km.

Map of Sri Lanka with resorts in Russian

If you want to study in more detail the location of cities, resorts and other objects on the island, then you will need detailed map Sri Lanka with resorts in Russian. There are many maps of this island, but nowadays the best one is to use interactive maps, one of which you will see below. This map allows you to find any object and zoom in to such a value that you can see any house on the streets of the cities of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has a warm climate. From May to October there are often unpredictable storms, but the rest of the time you can enjoy gentle sea breeze. Sri Lanka rarely gets very hot, but the island's high humidity worries many Russian travelers. Climate-sensitive travelers usually need a few days to acclimatize. Depending on the region of the island, the air temperature during the day can fluctuate between 16 and 35 degrees. While in the wetter southwestern region of the island, especially from May to October, you can expect very a large number of precipitation, the northeastern region remains relatively dry. The sunniest weather in Sri Lanka usually occurs between January and April.
Most of Sri Lanka is covered tropical forests, which is typical for a region with a prevailing humid and warm climate. The enormous wealth of plants and trees is the result of these climatic conditions. The Bodhi Tree, the oldest tree in the world, defies all the unevenness of nature today and is truly attractive. In the north and east of the island, due to the drier climate, there are noticeably more bushes and shrubs.
Another gift of nature in Sri Lanka are the beautiful ones, which are appreciated by numerous tourists.
Various representatives of the animal world in Sri Lanka have adapted to warm, humid climate. Animal lovers will be delighted to see monkeys jumping from tree to tree, Asian elephants and a beautiful palm squirrel, which is similar to the chipmunks we know. Even thousands of crawling animals feel very comfortable here.

Mountains of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka can be divided into three landscape areas. One of them is the mountainous terrain, where you can climb mountains up to 2500 meters high. This is also the area of the world famous Ceylon tea. In the highlands of Sri Lanka you will find many attractions and very beautiful places, for example, the giant Bambarakanda waterfall. This waterfall is famous for the fact that the water here falls from a height of 240 meters.
The mountains take up quite large area Sri Lanka, but still the most most The islands cover tropical areas.
The third zone, which is the most popular among vacationers, is coastal zone with beautiful beaches and big amount coconut palms.
