Eris was noticed in 2005 while analyzing one of the photographs of the night sky taken in 2003 using the same telescope. A few days after the discovery of the dwarf planet in collaboration with the scientist S. Tourelotte, a group of scientists again “found” the object only with the help of something else, no less powerful telescope- SMARTS, located at the Cerro Tololo Observatory. After several months of regular observations, new details about Eris were published, including its approximate size and orbital values. The discovery of another dwarf planet was officially announced in July 2005. First, as expected when registering a new cosmic body, he had his own serial number 2003 UB313.
Then disputes and disagreements began to arise between scientists regarding the classification of this object, which directly affected official name planets. Then in 2006, MAC proposed giving the facility a temporary name - Xena. Although the name was temporary and even unofficial, it was reserved by a group of discoverers for a new object that would be larger than Neptune, as scientist Bike Brown said. Michael Brown also said that he initially wanted to name the object Lila, which was similar to his daughter's name. Repeated determinations of the parameters of Eris, made in 2007 using the Spitzer space probe, showed that the diameter of the object is 2600 + 400-200 km.
Occultation of a dim star by Eris
Scientists presented the most accurate results of measuring the indicators of Eris in 2010. The period of rotation of such bodies around their axis is calculated by light curve analysis. But determining the rotation period of Eris is complicated by the regularity of its shape and the uniformity of the surface layer. In 2005, astrophysicists presented a paper with the first defined limit, which was 8 hours. Chemical composition of Eris
From the fluctuations in heat flows emanating from Eris, it is possible to calculate the average temperature characteristic of its surface (-253 °C) using the Stefan-Boltzmann law. At the point located as close as possible to the star, temperatures on the planet reach -230 °C. Thanks to spectroscopic studies in 2005, carried out by the Jiminy Observatory machine, it was possible to detect abundant amounts of methane snow on the upper surface layer of the dwarf planet, which makes it similar to Pluto and Triton. This may explain the relatively high albedo of Eris. Nitrogen ice was also found in the snow on its surface, the concentration of which increases with depth into the lower layers of snow. Unlike the surfaces of Triton and Pluto, which have a reddish tint, the surface layer of Eris has grey colour, which is the reason for the presence of a significant amount of ethane ice in it.
In 2011, scientists discovered that the frozen gas on the surface of Eris begins to sublime as the temperature increases, thereby forming a so-called temporary atmosphere. Scientists predict that the “next” atmosphere of Eris will form in 250 years.
