St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University, (until 1990 - Leningrad Order of Lenin Shipbuilding Institute (unofficial - Korabelka) is the only university in Russia that, in three main faculties, trains world-class marine engineers in the design, construction and technical operation of sea vessels, surface combat ships and submarines, technical means for the exploration and production of oil, gas and other minerals in seabed.

Story

The university was founded by the shipbuilding department (later the faculty) created in 1899. According to the institute's project, the shipbuilding department was supposed to produce marine engineers trained both for the construction of hulls and mechanisms of ships, mainly commercial ones.

After the start of the work of the shipbuilding department, the competition for this specialty was the highest at the Polytechnic Institute and remained so for several years.

The number of students at the shipbuilding faculty was set at 24 people in each course. The first dean of the shipbuilding faculty of the Polytechnic Institute was appointed naval engineer Konstantin Petrovich Boklevsky, who held this position continuously from 1899 to 1923.

SPbGMTU (formerly LKI) is the only university of its kind in Russia. We will learn about the kind of specialists they train there, and also talk about the history of the educational institution, its faculties, academic buildings, and even dive a little into student life.

Start

SPbGMTU (formerly LKI) in its original form was created in 1899 by Emperor Nicholas II. He only gave his consent to the creation of a shipbuilding department at the Polytechnic Institute, but this marked the beginning of the creation of the university. The educational institution trained marine engineers for the construction of hulls and mechanical ships on a commercial basis. As soon as the specialty was opened, and for several more years, the competition here was the highest.

Each course was set to have 24 students. The first dean of the faculty was the naval engineer K. Boklevsky, who held this position until 1923. After the revolution that happened in 1917, the institute increased the number of faculties and the number of students.

Pre-war period

Korabelka (St. Petersburg) in 1930 ceased to be a department. The shipbuilding department became the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute. The establishment moved from Sosnovka to its new neighbor - the Marti plant. The institute was located on Lotsmanskaya Street. Since the country needed shipbuilders in large numbers, hundreds of students studied at the faculties of the educational institution.

War

With the outbreak of the Soviet-Finnish War, residents of Leningrad began to join ski battalions to defend their home. Students of St. Petersburg State Medical University (shipbuilding) mostly ended up in the 100th volunteer battalion, which took an active part in the hostilities. When World War II began, a separate machine-gun and artillery battalion was formed from the shipbuilding students. The militia gathered in the building of the educational institution, where they were received by the selection committee without interruption. After the initial preparations were completed in 1941, the task was set to build a fortified area on the platform site on the Babigon Heights. Already in the fall of the same year, the fighters held the fascist division with the help of tanks and aircraft. The enemy was stopped thanks to a tough and confident defense. However, the losses of soldiers reached 90% among personnel and 100% among command personnel. Therefore, the association disappeared as a fighting unit. The same fate befell other volunteer regiments, of which there were quite a few.

When the blockade of Leningrad began, St. Petersburg State Medical University (formerly LKI) stopped working. Some of the students and teachers were evacuated to Przhevalsk. The training of students for shipbuilding continued here. Teachers and students moved to the Nikolaev Shipbuilding Institute.

After the war

When the war ended, the shipbuilder (St. Petersburg) received a new rector in the person of Evgeniy Tovstykh. Under his strict leadership, the institute was revived and brought back to life, so it was most difficult for him. He made every effort to establish a scientific and educational base, and did a lot to replenish the material and technical sphere. His work had a result: in 1962, the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution on the construction of a new building of the institute on Ulyanka. A little earlier, the authorities decided to demolish the building on Lotsmanskaya Street and build a laboratory building in its place. Also in 1962, a department for correspondence students was created. 5 years later, St. Petersburg State Medical University (formerly LKI) was awarded the Order of Lenin for achievements in training shipbuilding professionals.

It is worth noting that not everyone can boast of what Leningrad University received in 1990 - the status of a technical university.

St. Petersburg Maritime University

However, the technical university did not have to bear the name “Leningrad” for long, because in 1992 it was renamed the Marine Technical University (SPBGMTU). The reason for this was the return of the name of St. Petersburg to Leningrad.

Faculties

I would like to say that not all universities in St. Petersburg can boast of being located on a street whose name refers to their history and main profile. But the educational institution discussed in the article is located at the address: Lotsmanskaya Street, 3.

Today the university has enough faculties for everyone who wants to connect their life with the sea, and not only. The following faculties are worth noting:

  • ocean engineering and shipbuilding;
  • automation and ship energy;
  • marine instrument making;
  • humanities and natural sciences education.

There is also a faculty of pre-university preparation and career guidance for youth, an extra-budgetary, secondary technical and evening-correspondence faculty. The university operates a faculty of targeted training and professional additional education on a contract basis.

For training there is the necessary production and laboratory base, as well as a pool for experiments. Approximately 1 million volumes are in the educational, technical and scientific libraries of the university. Teachers regularly publish methodological works, and students are busy creating wall newspapers. Since 2005, the St. Petersburg State Medical University museum has been operating. And until the fall of 2001, there was an Interuniversity Center for Humanitarian Education in the field of religious studies.

Provides St. Petersburg State Medical University with a dormitory for its students. The university has three 11-story buildings at its disposal. The dormitories have all the conditions for a comfortable stay for students. They are provided for out-of-town students.

Housings

There are four buildings in total: “A”, “U”, “B” and “D”. The building called “U” is located in the historical district of the city of Ulyanka. The structure of the educational and laboratory building resembles that which is very symbolic. The building was built in 1978. There are a large number of classrooms, a gym and canteens. A Student Center was being built behind the building, but construction was never completed. Plans for the construction of a second building opposite building “U”, and between them - a pool for experiments, also remained unrealized.

The ensemble of buildings of the educational institution also includes dormitory buildings, which in student circles are called “three poplars” or “three little pigs”. This building houses 1st and 2nd year students who study general engineering disciplines. At the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute, as it is sometimes called, buildings “A” and “B” house the main administrative services and some faculties, as well as part of the library. Building “G” houses only the Faculty of Marine Instrumentation. The building most likely received its name due to the fact that it is located near the Gorkovskaya metro station.

In addition to educational buildings, there is a yacht club on Krestovsky Island and a rowing base. It is also worth noting that St. Petersburg State Medical University (shipbuilder) has a research base in Primorsk, Leningrad region. In the spring of 2012, the branch of the educational institution in Severodvinsk was closed.

student life

The active and main body of student government is the Student Council, which consists of 4 departments. The PR department is involved in attracting students to various events held by student council activists. The cultural department organizes competitions, concerts, festivals and parties. The charity department actively cooperates with a number of charitable non-profit organizations in the city. The internship department conducts seminars and trainings for student council interns. The student council is also involved in organizing events in the civil and cultural sphere.

There is a theater-studio "Cameo", which is a winner of international awards in the field of theatrical art. The theater was created in the spring of 2011 and is still actively operating. There is a separate student council on sports education, which deals with the organization and conduct of health and sports events at the university. Works closely with the Department of Physical Education. It is worth noting that St. Petersburg State Medical University participates in championships as part of the University Cup.

St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University is the only university in Russia that, at three main faculties, trains world-class marine engineers in the design, construction and technical operation of sea vessels, surface ships and submarines, technical means for the exploration and production of oil and gas and other minerals on the seabed. The history of St. Petersburg State Medical University began in 1902. The first competition consisted of twenty people per place! How prestigious is Korabelka education today? Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of St. Petersburg State Medical University Evgeniy Alekseevich Krotov answered this and other questions to our portal.

— What is the competition in recent years for the three main faculties of the University?

— After they began to accept students on the basis of the Unified State Exam, we talk about this competition in a sense conditionally. The application competition is the first competition. And the second one, which talks about the passing grade. Our competition is quite decent: from 4 to 10 people for some specialties, but our passing score is average - from 140 to 180 points in three Unified State Examinations. There is such a thing as monitoring of universities and there are monitoring indicators that are taken into account by the Ministry of Education. There are 8 main indicators and one of them is the average Unified State Examination score. If a university fails in more than three indicators, it is considered ineffective.

Our score is now around 57, and the standard is approximately 66.3. From the point of view of the passing score, we do not reach this standard. But we must understand that it is very conditional, because its average value is taken. There are specialties with a higher passing score, and there are universities where the Unified State Exam scores are different. Especially for technical specialties. Another important indicator here is how many St. Petersburg residents are studying at the university. This is something we can boast about. On average in the city, among those admitted to technical universities, about 72% are from other cities, and in our country it is about 62%. More than 50%, and according to some estimates up to 80% of the entire shipbuilding industry is concentrated in St. Petersburg. Naturally, for us the recruitment of St. Petersburg residents is a cornerstone issue, and we are quite successfully solving it.

— Is the prestige of education at St. Petersburg State Medical University growing?

It is growing significantly. Along with the growth of industry and orders, the demand for specialists who must carry out these orders naturally increases. In addition, those people who were brought up in the Soviet Union are leaving one way or another and there must be replenishment. In the 90s and early 2000s, there was no replenishment of this potential. The industry was in decline, the whole body was sick. The university also survived during these years. Now everything is growing and developing.

According to our estimates, which we prepared in March for the supervisory board, about 400 of our graduates in naval specialties should be in demand in St. Petersburg and about 1000 in the rest of the country. What is important and speaks additionally about the prestige of the university!

How many budget places does the University have?

Currently, there are 1,182 budget places, taking into account all forms of education and all areas of training. Bachelor's degree is around 750, this does not take into account humanities specialties, because there is no budgetary admission for them. There were 170 budget masters this year, next year there will be 250.

How affordable is paid extra-budgetary training? Is it true that with excellent academic performance during 2 semesters you can transfer from a paid form of education to a free one?

You can only transfer to a free place where it exists. In our university, like in any other, there is a regulation on the procedure for switching from extra-budgetary education to budgetary education. It can be done. Two semesters of good and excellent grades. But this is not enough. The key point is the availability of budget space. If we hired 25 people on the budget and they all continue to study, then even if there is a non-budgetary student who meets the conditions, the transfer will not work. In technical specialties, it is extremely rare that we do not expel someone, although it does happen.

I want to say something else here. Some of our specialties are included in the so-called third price group and, at the same time, in the priority group of specialties. This is also our achievement, the result of active work over the past year and a half. That is, previously, about 60 thousand subsidies per person were allocated from the federal budget for the training of our specialists, and now up to 190 thousand. The cost of extra-budgetary training for technical specialties is quite decent - from 135 to 190 thousand per year. It cannot be lower than state subsidies allocated for budget education. Now, if there is no budgetary admission for a destination, then we can set the price based on our own considerations. For humanities specialties, our tuition fees are about 80 thousand per year. We began to fear that we would not recruit anyone for paid technical specialties, because previously the cost of training in them was lower than, for example, in economics, but now it is significantly higher. However, this year we accepted only 15 master’s students for this money, that is, 10% of the total admission. This also speaks of prestige and demand.

How many bachelors, specialists, and masters does the University produce per year in its naval departments?

We have entered the Bologna process, in which we now graduate bachelors and masters. At the same time, we still had specialists. This is our great achievement and I can say about it with pride - we retained specialists in the most difficult years, but until this year we trained specialists only in a military training center. And only the demand and our activity led to the fact that since 2016 we are allowed to recruit specialists for the main “ship” specialties.

Generally speaking, a ship is the most complex engineering structure that humanity has created. It is not for nothing that we therefore have 3 basic faculties: shipbuilding and ocean engineering, ship energy and automation, and marine instrument engineering. And since this is the most complex structure, then teaching a person only 4 years is not enough. Most bachelors need to complete their studies in a master's program, and when a specialty develops, this will make our task much easier. And industry experts support us so that we develop a specialty, because bachelors are not so in demand for such a complex production as shipbuilding. Previously, only about 30 masters were accepted for “ship” specialties, but this year we had 152 masters, and there was already a competition for master’s degrees. Next year there will be 250 masters. This is for budget places.

In addition to the fact that we received a specialty, we again, as in Soviet times, received the right to train our specialists for 5.5 years. True, on the condition that we must teach for six months not at the expense of state funds. We will receive subsidies for 5 years, and then for in-demand specialties we must independently find funding from enterprises interested in our specialists. We have this in our strategic development plans. Moreover, it will be agreed with enterprises what specific competencies specialists should acquire in order to meet their needs.

Is there a distribution now?

There is no such distribution as there was in the Soviet Union, not only in a global sense, but even in terms of target reception. However, if a student has studied in his specialty and the company offers good conditions, then he goes there. With the advent of the new administration, relations with enterprises have been very well strengthened.

We are in very serious partnerships with state corporations: the United Shipbuilding Corporation, Rosatom, Rosneft and others. We maintain contact with enterprises and large scientific centers: Krylov Scientific Center, Admiralty Shipyards, Rubin, Malachite, Prometheus and others. Now we have 7 basic departments open. For example, Malachite allocated enormous amounts of money to equip classrooms.

I can give a separate example of Rosneft. Now, thanks to this corporation, the Far Eastern shipbuilding and ship repair center is developing magnificently. Representatives of the Rosneft personnel service from the Far East came to us at the end of June to present diplomas to encourage the guys to work in the Far East. They provide housing, good salaries, and conduct internships in South Korea. 12 graduates signed up immediately. They are ready to hire up to 60 specialists per year.

Are there any statistics on how many University graduates get jobs in their specialty?

We do not have serious monitoring of distribution. It's difficult to organize. We cannot report on each graduate, where he got a job. Therefore, monitoring is selective in nature, although the statistical sample we used for monitoring is quite representative. The majority of us still work in their specialty - 70-80%. This is a very large percentage, after all, the profession is prestigious, well paid and there are prospects for career growth. For some groups of specialties, there is even a shortage of personnel. However, there are always random people, but those who have studied with us and received a basic technical education can realize themselves in other related and not so related professions.

Which specializations are in greatest demand?

Firstly, the entire enlarged group of shipbuilding specialties (about thirty profiles). The competition for them is one of the highest. The breakdown is by area of training, then by bachelor's degree profile. It's the same with master's degrees. And within shipbuilding, the most in-demand specialties are offshore oil and gas complexes. Welding is in demand, ship acoustics. I highlight, but I don’t want to offend anyone. At the Faculty of Naval Energy and Automation and Marine Instrument Engineering there are very popular specialties and a great hunger for specialists in this field.

There are specialties for which they are less successful, but they are still in great demand. We carry out recruitment for directions in applied mathematics and mechanics with tension. These are complex professions that require an appropriate level of training, and, unfortunately, not everyone has it. Therefore, the guys weigh their options and decide where to go. By the way, a low score on the Unified State Exam sometimes doesn’t mean anything. I have a student in the group of applied mechanics with a Unified State Examination score of 24 in mathematics, the head of the group, so he is one of the best in the same mathematics in the group.

What new departments and specialties have opened in recent years?

We accredited the same “oil and gas” just last year; technosphere safety and management in technical systems have recently opened. Rather, it’s not so much that the directions themselves are new, but within the framework of enlarged groups you can make profiles if the need suddenly arises. As for departments, we do not strive to create new departments, but to optimize staffing. Over the previous years, in connection with the opening of new specialties and the emergence of a humanities block, we have formed many departments.

At the same time, since the late 90s, the number of students has been decreasing (now the trend is increasing) and, accordingly, the number of teachers should have been decreasing, and if so, then there would be fewer departments. We need to think about providing education with the optimal composition. We began to open basic departments. This is a division within the department, which has its own head, and is focused on some kind of enterprise. There isn't a big staff there. There is usually one director per institute.

The basic department allows you to conduct internships at the enterprise, conduct research work, students can write diplomas and master's theses using the research potential of the enterprise. In recent years they have been working at these enterprises. There are currently 7 operating basic departments, and we plan to open 12 more in the near future.

Do students do internships mainly at enterprises that have basic departments?

Ideally, this would be the case, but not all enterprises have a basic department in our country. Then the standard scheme is used. We conclude agreements with relevant enterprises and students do internships there. As a rule, we strive for internships to take place at St. Petersburg shipbuilding enterprises. This is economically determined. But there are practices in Nizhny Novgorod, and in Kaliningrad, and in Severodvinsk, and I hope that now there will be in Sevastopol. And, of course, there will definitely be practice in the Far East next year.

How many graduates go into science and stay at the University?

Few remain in the departments. They remain in the research department. In general, science is very supportive of us now. We even have a slogan: “Education through science.” This is a slogan for both students and teachers. In general, you can earn significant money in science. The average salary of our assistants is 72 thousand; some professors receive less if they do not engage in science. This is due to science. If the guys stay at the institute, even as assistants at the department, then they participate in research work. But this money is given for a reason. Scientific work is very hard.

How productive are research laboratories and how is this reflected?

This is reflected in the volume of scientific research. One of the indicators for monitoring universities is the volume of scientific research. To meet this indicator, the volume should be about 30-50 million rubles per year, but for us it is more than 800 million rubles! Science is something we can be proud of to a certain extent. Here we will not get lost at the level of leading universities in the city and in the country. There is a scope of work that is financed by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. This part is not so significant for us, although if we only had this, we would still pass the monitoring indicator. If we take the component that is not related to funding from the Ministry of Education, then it is at the level of Polytechnic University, LITMO and other leading technical universities, especially if we take it in terms of one student. And this is also our merit.

What is the University’s educational base and how often is it updated (literature, modern equipment, technology)?

Literature is not exactly the basis. It is definitely being updated. The literature required by federal state educational standards is purchased. We strive to purchase less paper literature and use electronic textbooks. We are trying to convert all our educational literature into electronic form.

As for the laboratory base, in the 90s it was impossible to buy anything additional - these were years of survival. Now we are developing basic departments in order to use the resources of those organizations where this can be done. There are also our own plans for the development and modernization of laboratories.

For the next 3-4 years there are plans to open and modernize the following laboratories: strength; hydroaerodynamics and seaworthiness with a modernized seaworthy pool and wind tunnel; ship electric propulsion systems; marine underwater robotics with an upgraded acoustic pool; conceptual design and economic analysis of promising marine technology; mathematical modeling; programs for hardware control systems for marine equipment. The participation of interested organizations and corporations is expected in their creation.

We had several meetings of state authorities on this matter in the Security Council, chaired by Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev. There is a point in the minutes of the meeting dated April 24, 2015, according to which corporations and enterprises will help us. In the future, we want to create a campus in Ulyanka, combining the entire infrastructure of the university, including modern laboratories, in one place.

3rd year, Faculty of Science. The university is simply the quintessence of the worst “achievements” of higher education - corruption reigns from the beginning of study to the very end, the caring attitude of teachers towards students (except for a couple of people in senior years), the material base is not even that bad - it simply does not exist, and the pathetic semblance is located in the basement, yes. The dean's office does not expel bad students who pay; you can reach the end of your studies by paying for the sessions through the dean's office or by paying into the teachers' pockets.

Disgusting is the best word to describe the quality of education at Korabelka. Hello to the main bribe takers Ter-Akopyants senior and junior, Golubev, Sorokin, Dogadin, Legusha, Embil (Google it) and the rest.

Incompetent, corrupt teachers, crumbling buildings, a library consisting entirely of manuals and a small number of ancient books, sports clubs in basements near the toilets and drunken coaches who do not come to training camps - this is the signature style and way of life of your beloved alma mater. There is a complete lack of knowledge gained, there is no feedback from the university at all - no one cares about you and how you study here. If you want to lose 4 years of your life and be disappointed in higher education, this is the place for you.

Of particular note is the simply terrible situation with corruption, the lack of normal infrastructure (libraries and dormitories are in disgusting condition) and the almost complete absence of acquired knowledge. The contingent of ignorant students, drug addicts, rowdy people and simply wonderful people corresponds to the university.

The ship's engineers are trained very well - not for the first hundred years. But it’s very difficult to study. There are all sorts of professors there, they don’t take bribes, it’s normal to close on the 5th or 6th attempt. But no one will give a humanities education as such, although some of the teachers (law, social studies, history, psychology) are above all praise, and they can easily present a lot of knowledge. but there are no requirements for humanities students. Shipbuilding is only for techies.. Or from the army to mow
